History
St. Malachy’s origins, and the traditions which are
intrinsic to its identity, can be traced to the 19th century when a
grade school for boys was build on the present site. Since that time the school has grown and
changed, always adapting to the times, while sustaining a tradition of academic
excellence in a family atmosphere.
Originally an all-boys school (taking the place, in 1954, of St. Vincent’s
Boys’ High School), in September of 1976, St. Malachy’s opened its doors to girls
for the first time. Today, housing a
population of over 1000 students, the staff, students and supporters of the
school are united in their determination to preserve our “small school” atmosphere
and to enhance our well-established reputation for academic, athletic and
social achievement. As Always, “Esse
Quam Videri” (“To be rather than to seem”) remains our watchword. May it always be our legacy.
Facilities
St. Malachy’s Memorial High School is located in the heart
of uptown Saint John, and allows for easy access to local businesses and
amenities. The St. Malachy’s Memorial
High School facility offers dedicated art rooms, culinary kitchens, biology and
chemistry labs, cafeteria, music rooms, learning commons, auditorium, and gymnasium. For student support services, students have
access to guidance and resource rooms with guidance counselors and resource
teachers available to support their needs.
St. Malachy’s Memorial High School is a welcoming environment
that maintains a family atmosphere where students have a shared ownership of
the school community. Evidence of this
can be seen in numerous ways around the school, but one exceptional example of
this is the student artwork that decorates the walls throughout the
school. As a part of the “Paint it
Forward” art program, students create paintings that are donated to various
community groups as well as placed on the walls of the school. This beautification initiative enhances our learning environment and is an excellent example of how our students are happy to invest in our community.
Bell Schedule
The bell schedule at St. Malachy's Memorial High School allows for
community development and student connectedness by embedding multi-grade
homeroom period, and the "Saints in Action" period.
- Advisory Period: Students are placed in a homeroom period
that is made of a mixture of students from grades 9-12. Students
remain with the same homeroom teacher for the duration of their high
school career to allow the student to build a connection with a staff
member. The staff member will
provide advice on the various situations and decisions that may arise throughout
high school.
- Saints in Action: Saints in Action is
an STM tradition focused on involvement and giving back to the community. Initiatives like Paint it Forward, Build
it Forward, and volunteering give Saints the opportunity to have a
positive impact on their local communities. Iconic clubs like Best Buddies, STM
Reads, Puzzles and Problem Solving, GSA, and Cybersecurity have continued
while new programs like STM Newschasers, Spike Ball, eSports, Culture Club,
and STEM Club have hit the ground running.
