Adjustments: websites and reading materials should be selected and used at the level that students are comfortable with. Some sites and books may be too easy or too hard. Here’s a good way to check.

Method:

Open the book or website.

Start reading anywhere.

Read for about ½ page or screen.

If more than 5 words are NOT understood, select an easier level.

If its too easy, select another site or book.

Note: Materials can be submitted/pictures taken of your product and send to Mrs. Cheeseman at kim.cheeseman@nbd.nb.ca for verbal feedback. I look forward to seeing your work. Have Fun.

Language Arts 8.1, 8.2, 8.3

Writing:

Before the school closure, students were working on memoirs these were due Friday March 13th. The new due date is to be determined. If possible these could be emailed to me at kayla.oakes@nbed.nb.ca

For some extra writing practice students could write for 5-10 minutes each day.

This website has a lot of creative writing prompts for middle school: http://www.spencerauthor.com/prompts/

Reading/speaking and listening:

Students were supposed to be starting book talks this week, however this will have to wait. Instead if, students could read a good fit book during this two-week period then we could hit the ground running when we return.

This website has a lot of great resources for encouraging reading. A lot of it is geared for primary grades, however it also applies to middle school aged children https://www.readingrockets.org/article/selecting-books-your-child-finding-just-right-books

Extra:

Many students had asked if we could cover cursive writing so they can sign their signatures, this is the perfect opportunity to practice this. I will attach some practice sheets.

Science 7

Students are wokring on various activities with rocks and minerals. Those activities include classifying minerals, focusing on specific vocabulary, knowing the 3 types of rock. The three types of rock are explained in the worksheets below. This is great review.

Also, students are working on various science projects. I am unable to attached their list of choices but recalling from memory here were some of them:

  • Create a children's book explaining the three types of rocks.
  • Write a song explaining the three types of rocks
  • Make a cake, demonstrating all the layers of the earth. Label it and bring it to school.
  • Create a poster explaining difference between rocks and minerals. There were a host of others. Students would have the handout in their science notebooks.

6C & 6S Social Studies

Such an interesting class!!! We have been discussing world issues - labor rights for children (and the lack thereof), Civil Rights Activists, importance of the United Nations - to name a few topics. Our current world pandemic of COVID-19 is a topic that we would undoubtedly be discussing this week. Students would have plenty of questions about it.

Pretend you are in class. Write a list of 5 questions that you would like answers to. There are no silly questions. I will do my best to answer all of them when I return.

Social and economic issues around this serious topic will also be discussed. Consider my questions:

1. How did this virus affect you socially? (gatherings with friends)

2. What are some economic i(money) issues you might be facing? If not you or your family, how does this affect a resturant in your town? What about your swimming pool services? What happened with Hockey? Why did this happen? Was it necessary?

OH boy!!! I cannot wait to hold these discussions any many others with all of you!

Grade 6 LA

Students were working on using figurative language within their writing pieces.Below you will find a PowerPoint of different examples of figuartive language. Review it. Students are beginning to implement figurative language within their writing pieces - and end of grade 6 writing expectation.  Also, students have been working all year on writing complex sentences - a sentence with 27 or more words using a semi-colon to seperat thoughts instead of and or but. This is also an end of grade 6 writing expectation.

Students are to write a story this week, applying both writing stategies listed above. Their story can be created - a narrative - or a retelling of a personal event - or a special moment in their life. Please apply all of the writing traits we apply in class:

  • Content - provide lots of interesting details
  • organization - use paragraphs and tell your story in order
  • word choice - creative and interesting words
  • Voice - I need to hear your voice as I read your story
  • Sentence structure - complex sentence is required
  •                                - ONE or TwO examples of figurative language from the PPT is                                       required
  • Proper punctuation is a must Periods, quotation marks, exclamation marks, question marks

Students are expected to read a minimimum of 15 minutes, each day. When we return to school students will be following more advanced reading strategies using a resource called "notes and notices".
