The New Brunswick Teen Apprentice Program (NBTAP) is recruiting Grade 10 and 11 students for Summer 2018 skilled trade pre-apprentice work opportunities with employers throughout New Brunswick. Applications will be accepted from November 20 to January 19.
The program is designed to give high school students a headstart on a skilled trades-related apprenticeship. It provides students an opportunity to gain work-based learning experiences in an industrial environment. A learning plan is established, the student’s experience is supervised by an employer mentor and a teacher, and the student may earn high school credits. This is an incredible chance for students to explore a career in the trades and enhance career development.
Potential trade placements include Instrumentation Control Technician, Pipefitter, Boilermaker, Insulator, Electrician, and Millwright. See the NBTAP website for the full list.
The summer work terms run from the beginning of July to the end of August. The first week of the summer placement will focus on safety training and orientation to the refinery, an industrial shop environment, and the “world of work”. This may be the first work experience for the students participating in the program and we want them to be excited about a career in the skilled trades.
Journeyperson Mentors will then work with one student for 4 days each week for 5-weeks (1:1 ratio) exclusively in an industrial shop environment. Each Friday the students will focus on reflection and field trips to trades training facilities and other industrial sites. The final week of the program will include creating a new resume that captures the skills learned during the summer and preparation for trades related courses they’ll be taking in the second phase of the program during their Grade 11 school year.
Students entering Grade 10 or 11 who are interested in the program must take Personal Development and Career Planning 10 and Introduction to Applied Technology 110.
