Cellphones & Electronics at RVMS

Good afternoon!
I am contacting you today to let you know that, effective immediately, we are banning the use of cellphones and electronics at RVMS.

Until further notice, cellphones and other electronics are not to be at school or are to be turned off as soon as students arrive at school and stored in lockers until dismissal at the end of their day.

As you know from previous messages, we are struggling with our students using this technology properly during school hours. It has become a daily battle for administration to follow up on incidents of mean and inappropriate texts and messages sent between students. To complicate this, students use other peoples cellphones, delete messages and texts and use platforms like Instagram and Snapchat to send messages which can then not easily be tracked by school administration if there is an issue.Threats and name-calling are rampant. Inappropriate images and messages have become the norm.

We will consider reinstating our current cellphone policy in future but are currently not able to manage the use of cellphones by 320 students when many of them are not using them appropriately.

This has become a barrier to learning and to creating a positive environment in our school. I have given my student body several warnings.

As has always been the case, families who need to reach their child during school hours should contact the school office.
Ms. McGrath
