Facilities
Harbour View High School was built in 1925 out of bricks and mortar. The character and quality of workmanship still resounds throughout the building. Tiled hallways and many examples of wainscoting and built-in cabinet work are still very evident. Artwork by renowned artists including Fred Ross, Miller Brittain, and Fred Willard can be found around the school in addition to artistic contributions from current students and alumni.
Some of the features at Harbour View High School include the following:
Auditorium
Harbour View houses a 610-seat auditorium with a Casavantes organ and grand piano. The school also contains science, culinery, and computer labs, as well as shops for woodworking and metals. Students enjoy using library facilities that display the works of Fred Ross and Miller Brittain. Murals by Fred Willard and current and past students and staff are displayed around our hallways. A gymnasium, pool, and fitness room are regularly utilized by staff and students.
Information and Digital Technology
The vast majority of classrooms are equipped with Smartboards which allow students to enhance their digital technology skills. The school has a variety of computer labs that can be accessed by classes to complete project work and papers. In addition, students have access to computer labs outside of class time to finish assignments and complete research work.
Culinary Technology
Our award-winning culinary technology teacher introduces students to techniques and cuisines from a variety of cultures. Students produce five course meals served in an atmospheric dining room. Our spacious, well-equipped kitchen areas are constantly buzzing and aromas of delicious food waft through the third floor of our school.
Fitness Center
Before and after school and at lunch hour, students can increase their physical fitness by working out in our fitness center. There, students and staff, will find various pieces of cardio and weight equipment for their enjoyment, including treadmills, stationary bikes, rowing erg, elipticals, free weights, weight machines and universal machine, elastic bans, speed bag, boxing bags, exercise balls, bosu ball, and skipping ropes.
Framing and Sheathing Lab
Working in our labs provides students with skills and knowledge associated with the framing-in or shell construction of typical single-family dwellings. Students participate in construction and planning activities, which includes interpretation of the National Building Code, blueprint reading, estimating and material layout.
Gymnasium
The school gymnasium is used throughout the day for classes and afterschool for team practices and other events.
Library
The school library contains an array of books including reference, fiction, and non-fiction in both French and English. The library also has magazines and newspapers too. Students are welcome to come into the library before school, at lunch hour, and until busses leave to use the quiet study tables or to finish work on the computers.
Metals Processing Lab
The Metals Processing Lab is a standard machine shop where students experience processes used in the manufacture of metal products. Proper operating instructions are given on a variety of machine tools common to the machine shop trade. Students apply theory as well as develop practical skills through the production of practical projects. Students will also complete specific projects while practicing operations such as threading, taper turning, metal fabrication (welding) and sheet metal work.
Mill and Cabinet Lab
In the Mill and Cabinet area, students undertake to develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and work habits required to construct cabinets and other miscellaneous millwork typically found in residential dwellings. Students, through a series of projects, will be involved with all aspects of mill work including planning, estimating, operation of woodworking equipment and machines and finish operations.
Science Labs
The school contains a variety of science labs that are used by students to explore concepts discovered in biology, chemisty, and physics courses.
