Today- students shared songs/memories within their small groups, and with the class as a whole. With the remaining class time, students had options to either make adjustments to their playlist assignment before tomorrow's deadline, or focus on reading their independent novels.

Today we discussed album covers; their meaning, how to create a message, what to include, etc. Students then went back to their own playlists to decide how to create an album cover. Tomorrow's full class will offer time to work on the album cover. Students should bring art supplies.

Students received their monthly calendar for May today.

The remainder of the class was used to continue working on the playlist writing section.

At the end of class, many students were still not finished with this writing, and they are to complete the rest of it for homework.

Today:

  • students received their ELPA results, please review these sheets at home. If a student's sheet says "Incomplete," that means they were not successful with the ELPA and they must rewrite it in their grade 11 year.
  • students received an assignment handout today called "Not Another Book Talk" (see documents section). This is what they have been working toward with reading independent novels at the beginning of most classes. This will be the final reading-based assignment for the year.
  • students had a bit of time to read.

Today we had some reading time, and then students were given instructions on how to complete a poem as their April portfolio piece- most students were pleasantly surprised to find that they already had 3 draft copies of poems done, and that they only needed to choose one and write a good copy of it. As well, students were given further instruction for organization of the portfolio, and how we will move into completing the portfolio at the end of May.

Today students finished up their group poetic analyses. Next we looked at the idea of symbolism in poetry- two types of symbolism we discussed were based on objects and colors. Finally, student were encouraged to create symbolic poetry of their own, using the two examples from today's class as inspiration. Students were instructed to choose one or the other of today's poems, copy over the first line only, and then write the rest of a poem from their own imagination. If students used "The Orange" poem, then in the first line their comparison should have been something other than an orange.

*see documents section for a copy of both poems.
