The Minto Elementary and Middle School Destination Conservation Green Team is an environmental awareness group which promotes the motto “Reduce, Reuse , Recycle and Rethink”, to the students and staff at MEMS. The executive of the committee, with assistance from other students, carry out weekly recycling activities which include:
•collecting office paper mix throughout the school
•collecting newspapers which have been brought from home
•measuring and recording the amount of newspapers collected
•promoting contests to increase the number of newspapers brought in for recycling
•keeping track of the amounts of newspapers collected by each class
•making announcements concerning environmental programs and issues
•reusing plastic bags for packaging the newspapers and paper mix which is picked up by Minlak Training Centre
•a beverage container recycling program which handles the recycling bins in the school cafeteria and gymnasium areas.
•cleaning out containers, counting them, and having them picked up weekly by Denton’s Bottle Exchange.
•participating in Earth Day activities
•distributing informational pamphlets to students and staff
Visitors at MEMS in the name of Science included:
•Alison Aiton from Fredericton Solid Waste Commission
•Scott Powell from Science East who visited on 2 occasions
•A 7 member team from Worlds UNBound
The MEMS DC Green Team is always interested in helping people learn and appreciate the benefits of conservation. Our school community is linked to our village through its involvement with Minlak Training Centre and Denton’s Bottle Exchange. The students are always encouraging others to do their part in protecting Planet Earth.
