Grade 1 Week at a Glance (May 1-4)

Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh
Week at a Glance (May 1-4)

Tuesday Night:  Pack Library books to be returned Wednesday.

Nightly:
·        Read good-fit books/Raz Kids. Have your child provide a retell of the main events. Also, when your child reads a word containing a sound team point it out to him/her. Try keeping a running list of the sound team words you and your child find in his/her good-fit books to practice reading and spelling at home.
·        Practice/review all sight words and Sound Teams.  If your child can read all of the sight words, have him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.
·        Practice the “no excuse” spelling words for grade 1.
Reading:
·         When reading at home with your child, make sure that he/she is self-correcting. Students are encouraged to monitor their own reading and to back-up and reread if something does not sound right/make sense. The goal is for students to be able to do this independently without needing prompting.
·         Continue to work on reading comprehension with your child by having him/her answer questions (both literal and inferential – “why do you think the character acted that way?”) about the books he/she reads. Have your child respond  to books by making predictions about what thinks could happen next, and by giving his/her opinion on events in the story.
Word Family:  - ug
How many words can you find that end in “ug”?

Writing:     We will continue to write recount this week.  We will review the components of a complete recount which should include a good beginning (lead, and introduction), middle with supporting details and an ending.  We will continue to practice including: uppercase letters in the correct places only, punctuation, adding descriptive words, using sentence stretchers, and spelling  etc.

Math: Numbers to 50

·        Have your child practice counting forwards and backwards between 2 numbers to 50. For example, count from 45-52, from 37-30, etc.
·        Write a number to 50 and have your child tell you what the number is.
·        Say a number and have your child write it (up to 50). Have your child practice any numbers he/she writes backwards.
·        Ask questions such as; what comes before 46? What comes after 47? Etc.
If your child is having success completing the above tasks with numbers to 50 extend to numbers to 100.

Ask questions such as:
·        If there were 5 children playing, how many fingers would there be altogether?
·        If I had $25 and I wanted to give each friend $5, how many friends could I give money to?
·        I have 43 hockey cards. How many groups of ten will I have? How many will there be left over?
·        I have 37 books. How many groups of 5 can I make? How many will there be left over?

We are also working on estimation to 20. Try placing a group of objects (buttons, coins, etc.) in front of your child, and have him/her estimate how many there are. Talk about using 10 as a referent (a small amount to refer to). For example, count out a group of 10 for your child and say “if you know this is what a group of 10 looks like, do you think there be more or less than 10 altogether? How many would you estimate there are in all?”
