Grade 1 Week at a Glance (Feb. 27-March 3)

Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh
Week at a Glance (Feb 27-March 3)

Nightly  Read good-fit books/Raz-Kids. Check for comprehension by asking your child the “who”, “what”, and “where” of the stories they read (characters, problem, and setting).
·         Have him/her provide a retell of the main events in the story.
·        Practice Sight Words and Sound Teams

Library – pack books to be returned on Wednesday.  We will not be taking books out of the library this week.

Literacy:

High Frequency Words: Review
We will continue to practice reading/spelling all of the 103 high frequency words on our word wall to see which words continue to be a challenge. Please review any words you notice your child struggling with at home.

Word Family:  - ill
How many words can you find that end in “ill”?

Sound Teams: Review
Please continue to review all sound teams.
A list of words containing sound teams will be sent home in your child’s communication bag. Please have your child practice reading/spelling these words and finding the sound teams he/she knows inside each word. You can play a game of “3 in a row” with your child by putting this list into a page protector. Player one reads a word and crosses it out with his/her white board marker, player two then takes a turn. Continue until someone has crossed out 3 words in a row! You can use two coloured bingo chips instead of putting it into a plastic page protector.

Reading strategies: Review
We will take the week before March Break to review the reading strategies we have practiced so far this year.

Writing: Writing a Strong Lead
This week we will learn how beginning our stories with action can grab our reader’s attention. For example; rather than - My friend came over, write I darted to the door as my friend rang the doorbell.

Math: Addition and Subtraction to 12
This week we will continue working on subtraction strategies. Students will be learning how addition and subtraction are related and how they can “think addition” when they are subtracting. For example, when trying to solve 10 – 6 = ___, students know that 6 + 4 = 10, so therefore 10 – 6 = 4. It can be helpful to use counters or small objects at home so your child can actually see the different parts that they are adding/subtracting.
