Word Activities

If you wish to practice additional sound teams and/or sight words, please see the suggestions below. Some games require two sets of word cards so simply make the words or teams your child is struggling with.

Tic-Tac-Toe

You can create a tic-tac-toe board on a sheet of paper (with one of the words of the week printed in each square and/or any other words your child may have struggled with in past weeks). In order to put an “x” or “o” in a square, he/she must read the word correctly first.

Three in a Row

You can play a game of “3 in a row” with your child by making a 5 by 4 grid and filling it with words/teams (as the one sent home). This can be put into a page protector. Player one reads a word and crosses it out with his/her white board marker, player two then takes a turn. Continue until someone has crossed out 3 words in a row! Coloured Bingo chips may also be used instead of the page protector.

Go Fish

Use two sets of word cards/teams to play a game of “go fish”.

Memory

Use two sets of word cards to play a memory/matching game. Place cards face down on table and player one picks-up/ reads two words. If they are a match he/she gets to keep them. Play continues until all cards are picked up and whoever has the most matches wins!
