**The grade one reading benchmark for the November report card is level C. The children are expected to read this level independently, fluently and with good comprehension for appropriate achievement (3).
 LIBRARY-return books by Wednesday (we did not have library last week) 
 
LITERACY FOCUS- review week
·        Sound teams : sh, ch, th, wh, qu, ck,  ai/ay, oa/oa, a_e   u_e  i__e  o__e
·        Vowel teams…”When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking”
·        Introducing alphabetical order
·        Reading strategies: Eagle Eye-Look at the picture for clues 
                                   Lips the Fish-Say the first few sounds in the word
                                   Stretchy Snake- Stretch out the sounds slowly then put them
                                                               together to figure out the word
                                   Chunky Monkey-Look for a “chunk” in a word that you know
                                   Flippy Dolphin- if the short vowel sound doesn’t make sense,
                                                               try the long vowel sound.
                                   Skippy Frog- skip the word and read to the end of the                   
                                                         sentence. Hop back and read it again.
                                  Tryin’Lion- try it again!Reread the sentence and try a word          
                                                    that makes sense
·        Sight/Word wall words:
      at, and, a, in, is, it, I , like, me of, school, that, the, to, was, went, play
                 friend, with, this, have, little, day,  away, say, are, go, up, us, we, like ,said,

·        Writing- Messages, lists, recounts …….spelling approximations (stretching out unknown words and printing all the sounds we hear), punctuation (. ! ?,), spacing between words, using word wall words, answering where questions,  including 3-4(minimal) ideas about the topic.
 
In writing we are focusing on uppercase letters for the first word in a sentence, for the pronoun “I”, and for the first letter in someone’s name, punctuation at the end of sentences (question mark, period or exclamation mark), speliing words that are easy to sound out phonetically (ie; cat, hid, bed), using the word wall to spell sight words (we have covered) correctly.
 
MATH FOCUS
·        Ten frame combinations
·         Number sequence 1-20, 20-1
·        Counting forward and backward between any two given numbers from 1-20 (if your child can do this easily, move on to higher numbers)
·        Naming numbers before/after
·        Naming numbers one/two more, one/two less
·        Number recognition
·        Number formation
·        Counting by twos to 20
·        Recognizing/naming familiar dot arrangements-ten frames
·        Representing/describing numbers
·        Part-part-whole-number combinations   
 
 YOU AND YOUR WORLD FOCUS
·        Review definition and characteristics of a group
 
Please review and do some extra practice if needed
·        High Frequency Sight Words –Keep reviewing the words covered until mastered. If your child can read the words with ease, have them practice spelling/create sentences in their practice book.
Sight word activity: write each word on a flash-card and place them in a paper bag. Have your child pull out a word and if he/she gets it right, place a sticker or draw a happy face on the back of the card and place it back in the bag. Play this game nightly, and when your child gets three stickers/happy faces on the back of a card, you can take it out of the bag and tell him/her she has “mastered it”!
·        Practice printing correct formation of letters in practice duo-tang. Refer to guide
·        Have your child practice reading/spelling words with “bossy e”
 
             Pin- pine    dim-dime   not-note   cut-cute   fin-fine  pet-Pete 
                   
·        Have your child practice counting forward and backward from different numbers to 20. For example, ask your child to count forward from 3 to 8, count backward from 19-14, etc. 
·        Say a number from 1-10 and have your child show you that many fingers.
·        Show your child your fingers and have him/her say how many you are holding up without counting.
·        Have your child show you a number with his/her fingers and ask them to put a certain amount down (“Show me 9 fingers. Now take away 3”).
·        Making sets of 11-20 items. Add one/subtract one and give amount
·        Have your child practice writing numerals to 20
·        Using the ten frame and small items for counters (coins, noodles or buttons) call out numbers to 10 and have your child place the correct number of counters on the ten frame. Place counters on the frame and have them tell you the amount in a glance.
