Week at a Glance (Jan. 14-18)

Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh

Week at a Glance (Jan. 14-18)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

Nightly – Practice sight words, sound teams and read good fit books/Raz-Kids.

Literacy:

Words of the Week:  about, how, now, our

(Please highlight these on your high frequency word list)

  • Practice reading the words

  • If your child reads them with ease, practice spelling the words and/or writing a sentence using one of the words of the week.

  • Sight words and sound teams can be practiced by playing a game of “POP”. Put the words/teams in a cup and pass it back and forth to pull out a card. If the person can read the card they keep it, if you pull out a card that says POP they put the cards back in the cup! When all the cards are gone the winner is the person with the most cards!

Reading:  Students are learning about contractions and how to read them properly which can help improve Accuracy when reading (ie; we’ll, they’ve, she’s, etc.)

Sound Team: “ou” (please highlight this on your sound team sheet)

  • Ou makes the sound as in out

  • Students have already learned that ow makes the long o sound as in grow, and have now discovered it can also say the same sound as ou, as in cow.

  • Practice reading the following words:

shout, clown, cow, loud, cloud, down, frown, count

  • Remember, you can make reading these words (as well as the sight words each week) more engaging by playing a memory matching game, writing words on a tic-tac-toe board, and/or playing “go fish” with word cards.

  • See “POP” description above.

Word Family: -   -ell     How many words can you think of that end in ell?

Writing:

  • We have been working on adding more details to our small moment stories, as well as proper use of upper/lower case letters, punctuation, finger spaces, use the word wall to spell sight words correctly, sounding out words, and printing neatly within the lines on our page.

Math:

We are starting formal addition/subtraction and using concrete objects so students develop a stronger understanding (counters, blocks, etc.) The following are some activities you can do at home to reinforce what we are learning at school:

  • number stories such as:

  • 5 dogs were on a walk and 2 more joined in. How many are there now?

  • I had 2 books, I bought 3 more, and then a friend gave me 1. How many do I have altogether?

  • There were 8 cars in a garage, 3 left, and then 1 more left. How many cars are there now?

Some students are ready to do these without counters. However, it is important that they start with them to really grasp these ideas.

  • Practice counting forwards and backwards with different starting points. Count from 3 to 9, 12 to 8, etc. This skill is very important when we start adding and subtracting without counters.

  • Ask your child what are some different ways he/she can build a set of 7 in two parts? (2 and 5, 1 and 6, 3 and 4, etc.) Addition and subtraction is easier to understand if students are comfortable breaking numbers up into parts, and putting parts together to see the whole amount.

  • Practice skip counting by 2s to 20, and by 5s and 10s to 50. It is important that students realize skip counting is actually counting sets, not just memorizing the pattern. Please have your child practice counting sets of items (noodles, blocks, buttons, etc.).
