ASDW New School AnnouncedGood Afternoon Families of McAdam Avenue School and Nashwaaksis Memorial
Elementary School,
We are writing to share that today, the Department of Education and Early
Childhood Development announced the site location for the new
Kindergarten-to-Grade 5 school on Fredericton’s northwest side. The new school
will be built on McAdam Avenue School’s current site and will be home to both
McAdam Avenue and Nashwaaksis Memorial Elementary School students upon
completion.
The school will accommodate up to 530 students and feature flexible learning
environments, including 27 classrooms, space for music and performing arts, a
gym, a library, a cafeteria and multi-use rooms.
We look forward to the addition of a new building to the school district and
the community. Students, families and staff will benefit, and learning will
take place in a specially designed setting to accommodate student needs.
During construction, students attending McAdam Avenue School will be
relocated to Nashwaaksis Memorial Elementary School. We will share more
information with families as plans are finalized.
Have a wonderful long weekend.

In-School Halloween Celebration InformationWith Halloween just around the corner and some very
different considerations in place for communities and neighborhoods, we
are proposing a different type of celebration this spooky season! Rather than
our annual after school Halloween Howl which has been cancelled due to COVID
restrictions, we are going to invite all students to wear ORANGE and
BLACK colors, SUPER HERO COSTUMES, OR HALLOWEEN COSTUMES during the school day
on Thursday, October 29th.
Given that costumes have not been permitted in previous years,
we do have some expectations we wish to share with you so that our special day
can be a safe one.
If students wear
Halloween Costumes of any type we ask the following:
- No Halloween masks
(that cover any part of the face) – Face painting is ok!
- No scary or
inappropriate costumes (horror movie character costumes for example
should not be worn – feel free to check with your child’s teacher in
advance if you are unsure)
- No fake or toy weapons
of any kind (toy guns, swords, knives, chains, etc.)
**Keep in mind
that students may be playing outside for recess in their costumes and NMS is
not responsible for any damage to costumes at these times
In terms of nutritional considerations for the day, our
school will be providing some healthy snacks to all classrooms throughout the
day HOWEVER, if any families wish to donate (nut free) snacks or a
monetary donation to the school, they can do this by contacting the school
ahead of time to arrange for a time to drop off these goods. We do encourage
healthy treat donations. Non-food treats such as stickers, small toys,
colourful pencils, notebooks or erasers, colouring books, activity passes, or
books are also good options. As our front office collects these types of
donations, we will be dividing these items equally amongst the entire student
population so that there is equity in what our learners receive that day.
*Our school will be following recommendations from the
Department of Education and Anglophone School District West. Some of these
recommendations include:
- Prepackaged
store-bought treats only (no prepackaged homemade goods, no fruit trays,
etc.)
- Homemade treats are not permitted to come from
students homes, prepackaged treats are permitted
- Do not permit
students to take from a bowl of treats unless the treats are arranged so
that children won’t come in contact with other treats when they grab
theirs. Doing up individual treat bags is a better option.
- Wash/Sanitize
hands before distributing pre-packaged treats individually to students
We are going to try our best to make this day a fun and
special one considering that Halloween Trick or Treating may not feel the same
this year! Our plans will be communicated to your children as we get closer to
October 29th. NMS Library Presents: The Storybook Pumpkin Patch
The
Nashwaaskis Memorial Library is growing a Pumpkin Patch and we need your help! Students in all grades can decorate a pumpkin to look like their favourite book
character and bring it to their class to plant in our Storybook Pumpkin Patch.
No carved or
cut pumpkins will be accepted!
Participation is completely voluntary.
Bring in those wonderful pumpkins AND your entry page to school this Monday, October 19th.
A favourite from each classroom will be chosen on Wednesday, October 21st. Pumpkins not chosen can be taken home (at the teacher's direction).
Need ideas on how to decorate your pumpkin? Visit Mrs. Moeller's Instagram page. Both her and the HES students grew a pumpkin patch last year. Just scroll down to that site, you can't miss them!

School Fees and Supplies for our upcoming 2020-2021 School YearSchool fees for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year will remain at $40.00. In addition to the $40, we would like to highlight some things that will be required:
- a full water bottle each day
- a box of tissue
- a clean community mask each day
- lunch bag and backpack
- a small bottle of personal hand sanitizer
- indoor sneakers
End of Year Report Cards, Yearbooks, and Grade 5 CelebrationsAs we wind down to the end of this very odd school year, we want to keep you informed on the following pertinent information:
- All report cards for Grade K-4 students will be mailed to families during the week of June 15th-19th. Families who have recently moved are asked to contact their child's teacher to notify them of their new address.
- Report cards for Grade 5 students will be distributed during our Gr. 5 'Drive-thru' Celebration. Parents/Guardians of Gr. 5 students, if you have another child attending NMS, their report card will be given out in person during the celebration as well.
- Gr. 5 families wishing to attend the 'Drive-thru' Celebration on June 16th are asked to confirm their interest with one of the Gr. 5 teachers.
- Yearbooks, at this time, have not been distributed to our school. This is due to printing delays at Josten's headquarters. As more information is given on a shipment date, families will be informed however at this time it is very likely that yearbooks for the 2019-2020 school year may only be distributed in the upcoming fall school year.
