​This week, students will move from narrative writing and reading to speaking situations related to argument and persuasion. 

In addition to daily silent reading of their independent novels, students will: ​

Tuesday

  • Read their completed short story to a group of listeners 
  • Determine the idea that the writers of each story in a group attempted to reveal 
  • Discuss how they brought the "less is more" concept into their writing process 
Wednesday 
  • Understand that speaking involves both physical features and language features 
  • Dissect sections of the Federal Leaders' Debate for physical and language features 
  • Dissect the opening speeches of the "Munk Debate on State Surveillance"​ for physical and language features 
  • Discuss physical and language features that they can use in their own speaking situations
Thursday
  • Brainstorm and discuss topics for class debates 
  • Vote on topics that will be debated 
  • Understand the structure of arguments and clash in speaking situations 
  • Prepare for tomorrow's lit chat 
Friday 
  • Participate in a literature chat 
  • Receive partners and pairings for an upcoming debate
