Information Items:

- Diversity and Respect Week begins on Monday in all New Brunswick schools as part of a provincial effort to support a safe, welcoming and affirming school environment for all students. At Fairvale Elementary, we will have special video announcements, will be sharing children’s literature that teach about diversity and challenge gender stereotypes. We will also be spreading gratitude and engaging in random acts of kindness.

-Student Led clubs will start the week of Nov. 28th. On Wednesday, we will be informing those who applied to lead clubs whether their club was approved based on their application and whether their clubs will run the first round of student led clubs or the second round in late January.

-We are very pleased with our grade two provincial reading assessment results from last spring. 93.2% of our students scored at appropriate or above whereas provincially 73.8% were at appropriate or above and 75.9% at the district level. Of the 93.2% who were at appropriate or above, 39.7% attained strong achievement. The percentage of strong achievement at the district and provincial level were 23.4% and 21.9% respectively.  F.E.S. has strong teachers, engaged, motivated students and supportive families who work together to achieve excellence!

-Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to assist at the Scholastic Bookfair on Nov. 23rd and 24th. At this point, we have a few parents scheduled for long periods of time. We are still looking for more helpers especially from 1:30-2:30 each day, from 4-7 on Nov. 24th (during Parent Teacher time), and Friday morning (Nov. 25th) from 9-11. Attached please find the class visitation schedule as well as parent volunteer schedule.  Perhaps some of you may be available for your own children’s class visits.  If you are able to assist, please email me at Bonnie.Hierlihy@nbed.nb.ca indicating when you are available.

-18 grade 5 students and 6 chaperones will be attending We Day Atlantic in Halifax on Nov. 30th.  We received tickets to this ‘invite only’ event because of our work and commitment to the local and global communities. (The last two years we were one of only two elementary schools in Atlantic Canada invited.)

WE Day is an annual "youth empowerment" event organized by WE Charity, (formerly known as Free the Children). The event started in Toronto in 2007 and is now held in cities across Canada, the United States, and the UK. WE Day motivates youth to take action on local and global issues. WE Day events feature speeches and performances by global leaders, social activists and public figures. For more information, please visit www.freethechildren.com

Although the event tickets are free, we have to cover the cost of the chartered bus (Optimum Ride), accommodations, and meals. Each family is contributing $100 and we have secured $1250 in donations from Vision Coaching, Vision Legal Recruiting, Live Big Coaching, AlCon Electrical, Shadow Lawn, Evolving Solutions, Darling Real Estate and a private family donation. A special shout out to Liam Veale and his family for almost single handedly securing all corporate donations.

-Please see the information below from the office of the Superintendent:

-The Christmas parade is only two weeks away and we have a great deal of work to prepare our award winning float. Please see the schedule of events below from our float coordinator:

Saturday Nov 12 at 1:00:  Construction.  Working on the float at the Pierces. Working on Lucy's stand, figuring out where to place the trees, finishing Snoopy's dog house and many other prep jobs that need to be done.

What to bring: Drill, hammer, tape measure, pencil

And remember: even if you only signed up for one job (costumes, construction or decorating) you are always welcome to come out for ANY work opportunities!

Next Saturday (Nov 19) is a big day. On this day we will be finishing up all the big items on the float and prepping the final details, doing lights, starting to decorate etc. We try to get as much done as we can on this day to make the week leading up to the parade as smooth as possible.

Evening of Friday, Nov 25. This is one of the biggest and most fun (and cold!!) times of the entire parade calendar. This is when it all comes together. All those last minute details that can't be done until, well, the last minute, are all done on this night.

These last few weekends are really 'all hands on deck'. We need people to help hang lights, run wires, touch up paint, decorate, lug, build. So any time that you can give in these last two weeks are greatly appreciated!

- Our fall fundraiser will be coming home on Tuesday. Again this year we will be using the Holiday Catalogue from Dieleman Fundraising Sales. It is a terrific catalogue with many options for families. Furthermore, there is an online registration option where family members can make selections from other catalogues as well. FES receives 48% of gross sales and we look forward to putting the funds to good use to make additional enhancements for students at our school. Orders will be due October 19th with packages arriving on November 21st.  Last year we raised about $5100 from our campaign and will be using that money along with $4000 from the Home and School to purchase a new stage for our gymnasium. The days of not being able to see your children perform in concerts will be a thing of the past!

-Our Terry Fox Walk was a huge success! Together we raised $615.90 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

-Thank you to those of you who were able to step up and assist with library. Mrs. Blanchard, Mrs. Branch and Mr. Robichaud still need an additional volunteer each. If you are able to assist, contact our library coordinator, Rita Raymond, ritaraymond03@gmail.com. Classes will start visiting library on Tuesday, Oct. 11th.

Message from PSSC (Parent School Support Committee) chair Emily McGill -The PSSC members are parents/guardians, FES Principal, Vice Principal and a Teacher representative and a member of the District Education Council (DEC).  Together, we work on the school improvement plan, share ideas to improve the school community and discuss issues that affect the entire student population.  We are looking for new members! This is a great committee for any parent, but especially for those who work full-time but want to be involved in the school life at FES.  The committee meets one night in October, November, January, February, April and May for 1.5 hours.  Come join us and help contribute to the learning environment for our children.  Please contact Bonnie Hierlihy, principal, at bonnie.hierlihy@nbed.nb.ca if you are interested in joining.  You can also reach out to the PSSC Chair, Emily McGill at emilykmcgill@gmail.com
