We will create a restaurant menu together as a class and use that to practice ordering meals (in preparation for our trip later this month). We will also be reading/ writing our own recipes in French. This will allow students we learn new vocabulary and share their favorite foods with the rest of the class.

Math: This week during our math lessons, we will be finishing our unit on decimals. We will continue to compare/ order decimals and begin to add and subtract decimals. This will tie in well to our French unit as we add and subtract prices on our menus.

February 25
Week of February 25 - March 1, 2019

Hi Everyone!

Here we go again! Another snow day. This moves our 100th day of school to Wednesday. The children are very excited about our 100th day of school and I have some fun activities planned for them. I can't wait!

This is also our Seusstastic Week. On Friday we will be going skating at York Arena. If you can help out with tying skates we would really appreciate it. This is a fun time for students and a great opportunity for great pictures.

In math the grade ones are working on addition and the strategies that help us. The kindergarten students are working on part/part/whole (which is a precursor to addition). eg. the whole is 5 and the parts could 3 and 2 or 4 and 1, etc.

Our new Word Wall words for this week are your, were, have, they, saw. We are still working on letter blends and this week we are looking at -er-, -ir-, -ur- or bossy r sound.

In You and Your World last week we talked a lot about washing our hands and keeping the germs at bay. You might hear the children counting to 20 or singing the ABC song while washing their hands. Haha but it works!

I hope you are enjoying this snow and making the best of it. After this week is March Break and we'll all enjoy some down time.

Have a great week!

February 01
Week of February 4 -8, 2019

Another cold week this past week and another month has gone by. We didn't get to get outside very much this past week because of the extremely cold days. I sure hope it warms up a little next week so the children can enjoy some fresh air and get to play outside. It makes a difference!

In writing, we are going to work on expanding our writing piece by describing things around us. Also, if you could send in a fairly recent picture of your child for some writing we are going to do that will help them describe whaat they are doing I would really appreciate it. Please send it in an envelope with my name on it so that I can stash them away and bring them out when it is time to do that writing.

Our new Word Wall words this week are that, than, after, could, would. The words are definitely getting harder but they are ready and are doing great with their reading!

In math, we are working on 1 more and 1 less than a given number. For kindergarten that is from 1 - 10 and for grade 1 that is up to 20. Try to have a conversation with your child or even quiz them when you have a minute to see how they are doing.

By the way, we talked about Groundhog Day today and we watched Shubenacadie Sam a little this morning and I told the children that I would send you the link for the live stream for tomorrow morning if you are interested. So, here it is.

January 18
Week of January 21 - 24, 2019

Hi Everyone!

Wow! It sure has been cold this week. I think we are all getting a little cabin fever with all of the indoor recesses we have had. Whew! Remember that we go outside at temperatures below -20 so make sure to dress your child in layers that they can add for outside and take off inside if they warm up.

In writing, we started talking about How To (procedural writing). We will be continuing with this track and doing some How To writing ourselves (How to build a snowman, how to make a sandwich, etc).

Our new Word Wall words next week are just, then, them, went and who. The Kindergarten students are beginning to figure out how to read books. Yay! It's amazing how far they have come.

Please read with your child every night. This can be them reading, you reading or both of you. Please also send books back to school on Friday so that they can replace their books on Monday to go home again. Thank you for taking this valuable time with your child.

In math, we are working on skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s for those in grade 1 and in Kindergarten we are doing so well with numbers to 10 that I thought I would stretch their thinking to numbers to 20! Woohoo! Great work everyone.

A math website we visited this week was this,

http://www.abcya.com/number_bubble_skip_counting.htm

Unfortunately, this does not work on the tablet without buying the subscription. On a computer it is free.

Have a great week all!

Mrs. Penney
