Kindergarten - Nov. 14-18

We had a great week of learning this past week in kindergarten.  It is very hard to believe that we have been in school for 50 days.  Time flies when you’re having lots of fun!

Notes - Please note that report cards go home on Monday, November 21st.  Included in your report card is an insert with your child’s parent teacher interview time.  I am looking forward to meeting with all of you on Wednesday afternoon/evening or Friday morning.

With Christmas drawing near, I would like to ask if any parents would be interested in coming into our class in December to help with various activities.  I have not finalized our plans yet but I am thinking about baking cookies with the children, decorating gingerbread houses and perhaps having a board game morning where the children will rotate through a variety of age appropriate board games.  In addition to this, I am looking for some mystery readers on Wednesday mornings and would love to have a parent come in and do a Christmas craft with all of us if you have a fun idea that you would like to share.

Literacy – We learned the letters Ff and Bb this week.  I introduced segmenting with the students to help them as they attempt to stretch out words in their own writing.  I have begun guided reading groups and our first reading strategy “Eagle Eye” was introduced.  Eagle Eye helps us learn that it is a good idea to look at the pictures in the books we are reading to help us figure out unknown or tricky words.

Next week, we will learn the letters Jj and Zz, will learn two new sight words (to, the), will continue with segmenting and will be introduced to a new reading strategy “Lips the Fish”.

We completed our study on More/Fewer/Same and the students have developed a good understanding of this concept.  It was quite tricky at first and I am very proud of the hard work and understanding they have developed as a result of their perseverance.

We worked very hard this week learning what it means to be a good friend and how to apply that to our lives.  The children learned that everyone carries around an invisible bucket that can either be filled or emptied and we learned that we should be bucket fillers and not bucket dippers.  Please feel free to click on the links below to listen to a story and a couple songs the children enjoyed this week.  We will continue to focus on these important life skills throughout the year.  I have been pleased to hear the students speaking about how their friends are filling their buckets in the classroom.  It warms my heart and brings a smile to my face.

 Have a wonderful week.
