Week at a glance November 26th-30th

Dear Parent and Guardians,

I want to say thank you to everyone who took time out of their schedules to come meet with me Thursday/Friday. I really enjoyed meeting everyone. Please make sure students are dressed for the snow (extra hats, mittens and socks).

Reminders:

Christmas Families- We are still reaching out to our school community to see if any families are in need of extra support this Christmas. The past year with support from staff, school community, and a few other local groups we were able give a little extra help to 8 families. If you feel you could use a little extra help this Christmas (gifts, groceries, etc) PLEASE get in touch with Roxy roxanne.yerxa@nbed.nb.ca or Mrs. Burnett Cynthia.burnett@nbed.nb.ca or call 453-5422 by November 28th. Please note that names are kept strictly confidential.

Book orders: November book orders are due tomorrow (November 27th) I will be putting the order in right after school. I am sending the December book order home today. They need to be back by December 7th (I know this is early) but I would like the books to come in (hopefully) before the holidays.

DOTS for Kids Day- Ring a Bell Campaign- On December 7th we will participate in the ring a bell campaign to raise awareness and increase education to inspire youth, family, and communities to take positive actions in support of children's mental health. If your child has a little bell that they would like to bring on Friday to join in and ring, please send it along.

OURSchool Survey- Over the next two weeks our Grade 4 and 5 students will be participating in a school student perception survey to share with us their thoughts about MAS. The survey measures 21 indicators based on most recent research on school and classroom effectiveness.

What we are learning this week:

Literacy: We are continuing to work on reading strategies as a class. We are also going to be looking at how we can compare and contract different texts. We will begin with our two class novels by the same author. We will look at how they are similar and how they are different.

Math: This week we are continuing our unit on multiplication and division strategies. These strategies will help students quickly and effectively solve multiplication problems without having to memorize everything. We have been working how to explain our process of solving a multiplication.

Science: This week are continuing our unit of properties and changes of matter. We are looking at the states of matter and how they can be changed.

Health: Students are finishing their brochure about stress management this week. We will also be have some discussion about personal safety.

French: We have begun our unit on family and close friends in French class. We will be doing various activities that include vocabulary relating to family.

Extra practice

Here are some ideas for games you can play at home with your child to practice the skills we are currently learning.

Math- If you have a deck of cards you can play multiplication war. This is great practice for multiplication facts. Split the deck in half, each person flips one card. Whoever can multiply the two cards that are flipped gets the card. Whoever has the most cards at the end wins. Ex: If you flip over a 5, your child flips over a 4, whoever says 20 first wins.

As we begin working on arrays this is a good review/warm up for students. https://www.education.com/game/candy-shop/

French- We are working on family/friends vocabulary right now. This website is a great resource.

Have a great week!
