Weekly What’s Up: November 12-16, 2018

I hope everyone was able to enjoy some family time over the long weekend.

It certainly seems like November is going to be a month of wild weather.  Please make sure your child is coming to school dressed for the weather.  I also recommend sending in a change of clothes that your child can keep in the classroom.

We are in the home stretch of our kitchen construction.  The theme of the S.T.A.R. student assembly for November is teamwork and Mrs. Burnett has invited our class to talk about how we used teamwork to build our kitchen!

We are looking for take-out menus and grocery flyers that we can incorporate into our kitchen center once we have it built.  If you have either around the house that you would be willing to send in the class would appreciate it.

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night. Your child should be bringing home a book to read each night.

Our No Excuses words for this week are: about, by, did, there and went.

The Halloween books have been put away and the class is eagerly waiting for the Christmas books and our silly sentence page to appear.  We are learning about nouns, verbs and adjectives and have been searching for them in our read alouds.

Math:  This week our numbers will be 48-51.  You can ask your child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can have them create their own representation.  You can also practice skip counting to that number.

We are continuing to work on 2D shapes and looking for 10 partners every chance we get.  We are also practicing place value to 50 and adding and subtracting with zero.

I have introduced the class to Which One Doesn’t Belong challenges.  I present them with a group of four pictures and ask them to tell me which picture doesn’t belong and why they chose that picture.  The trick is that there is no one right answer for these challenges.  It helps students learn how to justify their answers and also exposes them to the idea that other people can think differently than they do.  Some students are finding it challenging to get used to the fact that there can be more than one right answer and it has led to some interesting discussions.  You can Google ‘Which One Doesn’t Belong’ to see some examples.
