Weekly What’s Up: October 29- November 2, 2018

It was nice to see so many families at the Halloween Howl.  Congratulations to Blake on winning our class pumpkin.

If you have not signed and returned your child's Show What You Know binder please do so as soon as possible.

Due to Wednesday being our half day we will not be having a typical Halloween party.  If you would like to send in a treat that meets the new nutrition policy guidelines please let me know.  Students are encouraged to wear black and orange and we will do some special activities to celebrate.

We said good bye to Zeynep today as she is moving away.  Our little class is now down to 8 students!

We are looking for take-out menus and grocery flyers that we can incorporate into our kitchen center once we have it built.  If you have either around the house that you would be willing to send in the class would appreciate it.

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night. Your child should be bringing home a book to read each night.

Our No Excuses spelling words for the week are: but, come, day, have and said.  We practice them throughout the week in variety of ways.  Students are expected to spell these words correctly in their writing.

The Halloween read alouds and writing activities will continue this week.

Math:  This week our numbers will be 40-44.  You can ask your child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can have them create their own representation.

We are continuing to work on repeating patterns, identifying even and odd numbers and are revisiting 10 partners (numbers that add to make 10).  Making 10 is a valuable mental math strategy and one that we practice often.  This week we will be going several Halloween activities that involve graphing, counting and comparing.

Halloween candy offers lots of opportunities to practice math skills.  You can sort the candy into groups based on type, create groups or two, five or ten and skip count to find the total of your child’s Halloween haul or you can pose word problems (If you have 10 chocolate bars and mom eats 3, how many do you have left?).  You can also ask what kind of candy they have the most/least of.  Just like a teacher to take all the fun out of Halloween candy J
