Week at a Glance     October 29- November 2, 2018                                                               Grade ¾

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Thank you to everyone who came to the second DEC public meeting at the school last Thursday!  Also, a big shout out to everyone who came to celebrate our Halloween Howl on Friday!

Please watch for our first marked writing pieces to come home this week. Review this with your child and then sign and return by the end of the week, please.

                                    Areas of Focus for October 29-November 2, 2018 

Writing- This week, students will finish up their independent writing piece and will bring it home by the end of the week to share.  We will also be focusing on using proper punctuation when writing and students will have lots of opportunities to practice this skill this week. 

Reading- This week, students will update their Show What You Know binder with their current reading level. The “appropriate” or “expected” reading level for a grade 3 student at this point in the school year is LEVEL M. The “appropriate” or “expected” reading level for a grade 4 student at this point in the school year is LEVEL P. Please talk with your child about their reading level this week, as many will be have moved up a level and will be proud to celebrate! Students receive new books to practice at home on Monday. Please remind your child to practice reading at home and complete the Reading Log.

Word Work- Students continue using the Words Their Way program this week. Each student will complete sorting activities related to their own differentiated list of words. This child-centered approach replaces traditional spelling tests and helps students recognize and learn how to apply sound, pattern, and meaning in their word sorts and other text forms. A copy of their word list will be in their Communication Bag, as well as a list of suggested activities to complete at home.

 

Numeracy-  Our whole-class lessons this week will continue to focus on telling time on a standard clock and how many minutes are in an hour, hours in a day, etc. Students will have lots of opportunities to practice telling time to the nearest hour, half hour and 5 minutes. Students will also meet with me in small groups during Guided Math as we complete work on pre-assessment #2.

Science- This week we continue our exploration of Sound. Students will read, watch videos and complete experiments related to the question: how do they make those funny sounds in cartoons?

Homework

The homework assigned is an extension of class instruction and is meant for extra practice. Completed activities can be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with me, please do so! :)

Reading- Inside your child’s Communication Bag are two levelled books based on their current reading level. Students should read for 15 minutes each night. Books at their reading level are in their Communication Bag. They should complete the reading log each night; please remember to sign it and place in the Communication Bag. Talk to your child about what they read and any Connections they made when reading (memories of experiences, related books they have read, questions they have etc.)

 

Numeracy- Practice correctly reading the clock at home. Draw some clock faces on paper and ask your child to draw in the missing numbers and then represent specific times you suggest. Create a free account at superteacherworksheets.com and you will find lots of worksheet for practicing telling time,

Writing- Have your child practice persuasive writing at home. They should choose a topic they care about and are interested in. Students start with a sentence that states their opinion, then a sentence about why they feel this way. Next, give three examples to prove their point and then wrap it up by restating their opinion.
