Weekly What’s Up: September 24-28, 2018

Another sunny weekend, although it certainly feels like fall has arrived.  Tis the season for dressing in layers.

Today everyone received their own fidget tool (a spiky ball).  We discussed how having something in our hands can help our brains focus and be better listeners.  After having some exploration/play time with the balls (to get it out of our systems) we discussed how to use them as a tool.  I also introduced the class to our take a break basket which we will use when we are having trouble getting into the ‘green zone’.  Ask your child to tell you about this regulation tool.

Happy Birthday to Zach on Wednesday!

Literacy:   Literacy assessments are nearly complete.  Today students brought home a book at their level to read with you at home.  I ask that students spend time reading to you and/or listening to you read to them each night as our only required homework in grade 2.  Reading with an adult has proven to be the best use of homework time.

We are continuing to work on writing recounts that have a beginning, middle and an ending.  Students have set their writing goals after conferencing with me and are excited to show me their progress at our next meeting.

Math:  This week our numbers will be 15-19.  You can ask your child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can have them create their own representation.  You can also show them a representation (addition or subtraction equation, picture, tally marks) and ask them if it is correct or not.  If they decide you made a mistake ask them to show you how to correct it.  This not only teaches children to be analytical, it also provides an opportunity to model that we all make mistakes.

I introduced the class to a new website, abcya.com, and it has been a huge hit.  It has a variety of math, literacy and seasonal games that are tailored to specific grade levels.  It is free to access on desktop computers, but an app is required for use on tablets and phones.  We have been playing games to practice identifying even and odd and greater than/less than.
