Weekly What’s Up: April 23-27, 2018

I think spring may have finally arrived!  Please remember that the mornings are still very cool so students should be wearing layers so they can adjust to the changing temperatures.

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night.  No Excuses words for this week are: his, look, play, so and than. These are words that students should be able to read quickly, spell correctly and use correctly in a sentence.  The class has been enjoying reading lots of poems to celebrate National Poetry Month. This week we’ll be reading some of Shel Silverstein’s many poems.  On Thursday we will have a whole school Poem in my Pocket event.

May book orders went home today and are due on Friday.  You can pay by cash, cheque or online with a credit card.  Reading over the summer is crucial for maintaining the skills your child has worked on this year and there are lots of great options for summer reading in this month’s flyers.

We are starting our non-fiction animal writing this week. Students have chosen their animal and signed out a book at the library to help with their writing.  If your child would like to do additional research at home I recommend https://kids.nationalgeographic.com.  There are videos and articles with lots of accessible information.

Math:  This week’s numbers of the day will be 133-137.

We continue to work on selecting appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction, with students working with equations at their level. Some students are working with 2 digit equations, some are working with a combination of one and two digits and some students are working with one digit equations. Please continue to practice real world word problems with your child.  Regular practice of the basic math facts (10 partners, doubles, 1more/less) is beneficial as students are realizing that using mental math is faster than having to calculate the answer.

Students seem to be catching on quickly to counting coins.  We are still working on using the name of the coin rather than calling it by its value. www.10monkeys.com continues to be a hit during math centers.
