Weekly What's Up: March 26-30

It was strange to have a full week of school last week.  It seems like it’s been a while since that happened.

Many students are noticing that their markers are starting to dry up.  Please check with your child to see if any of their colours (markers, crayons, pencil crayons) need to be replaced.

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night.

No Excuses words for this week will carry over from last week: come, don’t, here, over and us. These are words that students should be able to read quickly and spell correctly.   Please sign and return your child’s quiz for last week’s words.  This week we will begin learning about contractions.

On Friday our literacy lead, Ms. Hemming, taught us about book making.  We talked about different types of books and about all the work that goes into making a book.  The students are very excited about making their own books and are working hard.

We have started learning about the three states of matter and the water cycle.

Math:  This week’s numbers of the day will be 117-119.

We continue to work on selecting appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction, with students working with equations at their level.  Ask your child to share their favourite strategy with you.  We have been using decks of cards and dice frequently to add and subtract numbers.  We are also working on solving word problems.  You can practice at home by orally giving your child a real life problem and having them solve it.  “We bought a bag of 12 apples and a bunch of 10 bananas.  How much fruit did we buy?”

On Wednesday I will send home some samples of your child’s work for you to look over.  These will be sheets that they have completed during math centres.  Often the work they do during centers is based on hands on activities and games with partners.  Much of the mark that you will see on their report card comes from my observations during centers and the work they do during guided math with me.
