Good afternoon parents of the fabulous 5s!

I hope you have a wonderful long weekend and family day! Here is what we will be learning in the grade 5 classroom this week...

Literacy: Students have started their small moment stories. They have been learning about watermelon vs. seed ideas. We will continue to look at developing the ideas and content trait, and will begin to look at organization.

Math: Our current outcome is SS1: Design or construct a rectangle, using either perimeter or area. We have reviewed both perimeter and area, and strategies for creating rectangles with the same area, but different perimeter. This week, students will learn how to create rectangles with the same perimeter, but a different area.

Science: In Science this week, we will be looking at how simple machines make complex machines operate.

Social Studies: Students are learning about sources that help people learn about the past. We will also explore oral history, and how this valuable form of communication has allowed history to be passed on from generation to generation.

French: In French class, we are exploring the world of sports. This week, students will learn about specific Olympic sports, and will research the sport of their choice.

Important notes...

Book orders: Book orders for March will be sent home on Monday. Orders are due on Friday, March 16th.

Hockey Game: Please send back the hockey game permission form, even if your child does not plan to attend. We need to determine interest and availability of transportation.

Baby photo: In anticipation of graduation, I have begun preparations early. I would like to create a slide show of student pictures. I'd like to include a baby photo of each graduate. Please send a baby photo (via email is preferred if possible, as I'm unable to scan photos in colour). Thank you!

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,
Liz McCabe
