Good morning parents of the fabulous 5s!

With Christmas break fast approaching, we are working hard to stay on task and accomplish as much as possible before the holiday begins!

What we are learning in the grade 5 classroom this week...

French: We have finished our food unit. Students will complete a writing piece, discussing what they eat as well as the importance of healthy choices. Today, we will begin the clothing unit. This week, students will discuss what clothing they are wearing as well as what clothing is worn during different seasons. We continue to learn new Christmas vocabulary.

Math: Our current outcome is N6: Demonstrate an understanding of division, which includes basic division facts as well as long division, up to a 3 digit dividend. Long division can be difficult for students, so please feel free to review this concept with your child at home. The acronym I use is Daddy (division) , Mommy (Multiply), Sister (Subtract), Brother (Bring Down), Rover (Repeat), and we are currently learning the "traditional" method.

Important notes...

Homework: I have only been receiving 4-5 homework books each week, so I am rethinking the format in which I send home homework/accountability. It is important for students to be reading each night, especially where we are not doing any English literacy in the classroom at this time. I recognize that fostering independence is important, so please check in frequently, and remind students to check their bags for important notices, and to fill out their reading logs/return them to school, as many students are not doing this on their own.

At this time, I will keep the homework books until the new year, in which I will begin sending them home once again.

Assessments: Assessments were sent home today. Please review these with your child, sign and return.

Mocco: A reminder that we are going to MOCCO in Mactaquac on Thursday, for a special dinner.

Christmas concert: A reminder that our Christmas concert is on Monday, the 18th, at 1pm. As the Music teacher is only here once a week, students are encouraged to practice their songs at home (Rockin' Around the Christmas tree, and Mon Beau Sapin). Both of these songs are available on YouTube.

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,
Liz McCabe
