Homework

The homework assigned is an extension of class instruction and meant for extra practice. Completed activities can be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with me please do so.  I will be checking reading logs throughout the week.

Reading- read aloud (even to yourself!) for 15 minutes each night. Complete the reading log each night. Remember to have it signed. Talk to your parents about what you are reading at school this week and what your current reading level is.

Word Work- study your word list each night. Try some of the new activities on the laminated Word Work card, or visit some of the websites below. Try making your own flash cards and practicing with a friend or family member. STUDENTS WILL BEGIN THE WORDS THEIR WAY PROGRAM NEXT WEEK SO WATCH FOR NEW ACTVITIES NEXT WEEK.

Numeracy- Practice math facts each night and have someone quiz you if possible. Try visiting the numeracy websites below for extra practice or making your own flashcards. Game suggestion: roll two dice and record the numbers as an equation. Determine the sum/product/difference and record the answer to the equation. Example: roll a 4 and a 3à 4x3=12   or  4+3=7   or  4-3=1.

Areas of Focus for October 30-November 3, 2017

Writing- This week, students will bring home a marked writing piece for you to read and sign; please be on the lookout for this on Thursday or Friday. Students will also have the opportunity to share their writing with the class and will be adding to their Writer’s Toolkit.

Reading- Students will participate in Guided Reading groups based on their reading level. In our small groups, we will be learning more about how to improve fluency and expression when reading aloud and we will continue to review reading strategies as needed.

Word Work- Students continue working with their Word Work Activities Card to practice their ten new words this week. Students will also have a chance to explore new Word Sort activities to reinforce word knowledge. Starting next week, students will begin using the Words Their Way program. Watch for new list words to come home next week, along with suggested activities. Word lists are differentiated based on a previously completed spelling assessment and students will have lots of opportunities to move up to more challenging words as they progress

Numeracy- This week students continue to explore numbers to 1000 (grade 3) and 10 000 (grade 4). Students are working on representing numbers in standard, expanded and with base ten materials.  All students will work in small groups for Guided Math sessions and explore lots of new games and activities at math stations related to place value and expressing numbers in a variety of ways.

Social Studies: This week Grade 4 students will learn more about three common things people explore. Grade 3 students will continue to practice reading maps of local areas and how to locate and describe where NB is in the world. We begin our first science unit next week!
