Orange T-Shirt Day

Hello grade 5 Whalen,

In English class we have been having some very thought provoking and emotional conversations about resident schools and First Nations history. We are also excited to be starting our First Nations research project. I thought I would share some beautiful reflections students had in their reading journals as a response to our read aloud Shi-shi-etko:

  • People shouldn't be judged by their race. People don't need to be changed - nobody is perfect, everybody is unique and that's ok.
  • I think it teaches us about how much it matters to keep what makes you you.
  • She wrote this book because no one should be treated this way. First Nations are different, but so are we!
  • I think she wrote this book to show that every child matters.
  • The book teaches you to appreciate everything that you have.
  • I learned that First Nations still are not treated equally today.
I look forward to more wonderful conversations and learning opportunities!
