2019 Youth Ambassador Program

Applications for the Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada, a three-week summer exchange program in the United States for highly motivated students and responsible adult mentors, will open on March 1, 2019 with an application deadline of April 1, 2019.

The Youth Ambassadors Program brings together youth (aged 15 to 18 years old) and adult mentors from Canada to promote mutual understanding, increase leadership, and prepare youth to make a difference in their communities.  It is an intensive program that takes place from July 15 through August 2, 2019, and is carried out in Ottawa, New York state, and Washington, DC.  Participants have all travel, meal, and accommodation costs during the exchange covered by the program, in addition to health benefits with limitations provided in the USA.

The Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada is organized by the Center for the Study of Canada, State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, with support from: the United States Department of State; World Learning, the United States Embassy in Ottawa; and Fulbright Canada.

Program organizers employ content with a highly interactive approach through a range of workshops, meetings, and site visits, plus home stays with American families.  Through direct engagement with leaders of community, public, and private entities, Youth Ambassadors will better understand civic participation and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Upon returning home, Youth Ambassadors will apply what they learned to implement community service projects that serve needs in their own communities, plus be engaged through mentoring and alumni network initiatives.

The program is seeking applicants with Canadian citizenship.  Youth applicants must be aged 15 to 18 years old, have at least 4 months remaining of secondary school (NO JUNE 2019 GRADS), and be dedicated to community service.  Preference will be given to applicants from under-represented populations, new Canadians, and Canadians from indigenous populations including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.  Candidates with a demonstrated interest in the USA and with little to no experience traveling to the USA are also preferred.

Please do not hesitate to contact youth.ambassadors.canada@gmail.com with any questions about the program or application.

Thank you for your interest!
