University of Kings College -Humanities for Young People

The Humanities for Young People (HYP) is a new residential summer program for bright and highly-motivated students from ages 15 to 17. It will take place at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 7th–15th, 2018. Secondary school students from across the country will have the unique opportunity to work closely and collaboratively with scholars from a variety of disciplines.

What will I learn?

The theme for HYP 2018 is Migration. According to the United Nations, “an unprecedented 65.6 million people around the world have been forced from home”. Canada prides itself on its multiculturalism, its relatively open borders, and its status as a “country of immigrants”. What role can we play in this global crisis? HYP 2018 offers you the chance to think about the cultural, historical, philosophical, and political issues that inform Canadians’ understanding of immigration.

You’ll grapple with questions such as: what does it mean to leave home? What does it mean to belong? How can we help newcomers preserve aspects of their cultures of origin? What do we do when these cultural claims clash? How does one become “Canadian”?

You’ll engage with a wide-ranging curriculum that will take you from Ancient Greece to contemporary debates about migration. You’ll encounter migrant literature. You’ll study philosophy that has shaped our understanding of human rights. You’ll spend a day exploring the archives and exhibits at Pier 21, a historic first point of contact for many Canadian migrants. You’ll work with professors, journalists, lawyers, advocates, authors, and artists to enrich your understanding of the complex experience of migration.
