Joslin Scholarship

Lena Pond was the last surviving member of the Joslin Loyalist family that owned farm property in Prince William. For over 63 years, she was married to Clarence Pond. Together they owned a home in Saint John, but after their retirement, they split their time between the house and the Joslin farm. Lena and Clarence were the kind of people who opened their home to their friends and family. Lena’s obituary reads, “The ‘Welcome’ sign on the door of their home in Saint John really meant ‘welcome’ as friends often gathered to enjoy an evening of music, especially Irish music, followed by a delicious pot luck supper, and at the farm, ”welcome’ meant a weekend of boating, snowmobiling, fishing, barbequing or whatever was in season.” Before her passing, she arranged to have a scholarship created in her parents’ names.

The Frank Fraser Joslin and Blanche I. (Hood) Joslin Scholarship Fund was established at the Fredericton Community Foundation in November, 2013, by the trustee. The fund honours her family’s farming roots by providing a substantial scholarship to a York County student graduating from a York County high school and entering agricultural college/university or veterinarian college/university. Lena Pond has ensured that her parent’s agricultural legacy and the legacy of the Loyalist farmer, will live on through the young people who receive this scholarship and who dedicate their lives to agriculture and/or veterinary medicine. This is a gift of love to her parents, her heritage and her community.
