University of New Brunswick Update

The University of New Brunswick understands that we are currently dealing with an unprecedented situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been many questions that have come up surrounding the admission process for your grade 12 students.

We want to assure you that students who have been provisionally accepted to UNB and receive an ENR on a core admission requirement (e.g. English 122), will be admitted for the fall term. While UNB has indicated that it will require a notation of CR for all core admission requirements, all offers of admission will be honoured. Further, those students who received an offer of admission and subsequently receive a notation of ENR for a core requirement will be provided with a pathway to upgrading.

We’ve consulted with the NBTA and EECD on grading for the coming term, and have been informed that Term 2 courses on final high school transcripts will be graded with one of two notations:

  1. Credit (CR): indicates students have met the core competencies of the material and have the background to be successful in post-secondary education.
  2. Enrolled (ENR): indicates the student attended the course but did not complete the required material.
We’ve also been informed that clarifying materials have been shared with schools and teachers, outlining that teachers and schools will have the authority to determine ENR or CR.  Clearly, the outcomes for each grade are different, and each school’s ability to provide core competencies will vary.  In response, universities across our region are approaching this grading formula differently.  At UNB, we want to ensure that no student is left behind, all students granted entry are admitted to their programs, and where additional supports are needed, we have them in place for our students.  For those students with an ENR and not a CR grade for the course, our program advisers will work directly with those students to ensure that any required or supplementary material needed to be completed will be arranged.

All upgrading courses at UNB will be provided free of cost to students who have received an offer of admission and subsequently receive an ENR in a core requirement. This includes upgrading courses over the spring/summer session as well as in the fall term.

We believe this is a proposal that supports the whole student, enables student success, and ensures the academic standards of the University are met.
