Weekly News For Dec. 5th - 9th

Dear Families:

Snowsuit weather is upon us!  PLEASE take the time to help your child become independent with putting on and taking off their hats, mitts, boots, snow pants and jackets. Also, they need to learn to be responsible for keeping track of these belongings so that all accessories are easily found at the end of each day. It would be very helpful for your child to have an extra set of mitts and socks in their book bag as noon hour activities often result in wet hands and feet.

 What we are learning:

Literacy - This week we will begin List 3 in our sight word books. The first 5 words we will be focusing on this week are: do, can, could, when, did.  Our reading strategy for the month of December will be to retell a story with a clear beginning, middle and end.  We will also introduce the sound for the vowel teams “oi” and “oy”.

Math – We will be working on addition strategies (+0, +1, +2)

You and Your World - We will be continuing to talk about traditions, past and present.

 Information Items/Dates to Remember:

·       There will be 2 Christmas concert performances this year.  The dates are December 12th and 13th.  The Christmas Concert is called “Elflandia” and both shows will be at 9:15 a.m. on those dates.  Families with last names starting with A-K are invited to attend on Monday, and families with last names starting with L-Z are Tuesday. All children will be performing on both days.

·       Our school will be collecting non-perishable items to donate to the Fredericton Community Kitchen – donations are welcome!

·       WE ACT group is selling Christmas ornaments for $1.00 each – proceeds are going to the Fredericton Community Kitchen and Haiti.

·       Due Dec. 7 – pizza delight fundraiser

 Homework

·       Each night have your child read 1 good fit book to his/her “homework helper” and please practice your sight words and phrases as well.

·       Continue to practice counting in a variety of ways (forward and backward 0-20, skip counting by 2s to 20, 5s and 10s to 50).

·       Remember to send in your library books (Friday is library day).

If your contact information has changed, please let us know immediately.  There are times that we may need to get in touch with you quickly (e.g. sick child, early dismissal)

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call me at school, send a note in your child’s communication bag, or send an e-mail.
