Learning in Depth
Barkers Point School will be hosting an Explore Fair on June 08 from 11:15 -12:00. This is an opportunity for students to showcase what they have learned about their Learning in Depth ( LID) topic. Parents and families are invited to attend.
The month of May will be Learning in Depth Month. The first step is for students to select a topic they would like to explore/ learn more about.
On Monday, May 01, a list of possible topics topics will be sent home. Please read the topics to your child. Have your child select three topice that he / she are interested in. Please feel free to include a topic that is not on the list. Number topic of interest choices 1,2,3. Your child will be assigned on of his/her top 3 choices.
Once topics have been assigned students will produce a "Guided" project on their topic. The goal is for students to become an "expert" on their assigned topic.
Learning in Depth projects will be worked on at home as well as at school. This is a great opportunity for families to assist with LID assignments. Please remember you are more than welcome to assist/guide with LID assignments but please do not do the wok. Assignments must be printed by students and they will be expected to explain their assigned work.
Homework assignments, which will be small, will be added to students Field Journals . Field Journals will be kept at school in preparation for our Explore Fair Open House. All work completed at school will also be included in LID Field Journals.
Literacy

Just a reminder that we will have a sight word “Show What You Know” with 5 words each Friday, Thursday when there is no school on Friday. Students are allowed to use the word wall for support. We had our first Show what You Know Sight Words on Thursday. Please check Show What You Know Duo - Tangs. Please sign!
Reading Strategies:
Eagle Eye: He has really good eyesight and reminds us that we need to look at the pictures for clues about what the words might say.
Lips the Fish: Lips the Fish. Fish have great lips! Lips the Fish reminds us that we need to get our lips ready to say the beginning sound of a word. We often combine Eagle Eye and Lips the Fish.
Stretchy Snake: Slowly stretch each letter sound to make the word
Chunky Monkey: This week we will continue to learn and practice using Chunky Monkey.Look for chunks you know inside of words (sing, flat, split)
Writing
This week we will finish working on Shape Poetry. We will also return to Small Moment Writing. It has been a while since we have worked on Small Moment Writing so we will spend a couple of classes reviiewing what makes an Appropriate piece of Writing. First thing, next week students will work on Small Moment Demand Writing pieces.
Math
We have finished our measurement Unit. On Monday students will be assessed on Measurement. We will start our Geometry Unit. We will be learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects!
Students will learn the names and attrinbutes of 2D shapes.
Students will learn to recognize and name 3D objects.
Students will sort 3D objects using a single attribute (ex. These objects can all roll, these objects have flat faces, etc.)
Don't forget to complete and return Library Permission Slips and complete and return form for Library Cards.
