This Week:

 

Take Home Books: New take home books will come home on Monday.  Please return them by Friday.  Remember that your child should be reading to you!


Winter Carnival

  • This week we will be having themed days each day of the week!

  • Monday - Crazy Hair Day

  • Tuesday - Team color day

  • Wednesday - Dr. Suess Day (Dress up like your favourite character)

  • Thursday - PJ Day

  • Friday - Jersey Day


100th Day!

  • Wednesday is our 100th day of school! We will be celebrating by participating in several different 100 themed math activities and stations throughout the day.

  • Please send in a collection of 100 small items.  We will be sharing these with the class and comparing sets.  These should be able to fit in a ziplock baggie (freezer bag is okay)

  • Thank you to those who offered to send in items for our 100th day trailmix recipe!  In order to make our recipe we will be reading a recipe/following instructions, problem solving and counting groups of 10 so we can make sure there are 100 items in our bag.

Literacy

Jolly Phonics: We have learned all our letters and sounds!  We will continue to review these throughout the school year.

  • This week we are reviewing the short vowel sounds.  They are tricky and are found in the middle of all our CVC words we are going to practice reading and writing.

Sight Words:

  • This week we will learn: with, be

  • We have learned: me, I, it, like, the, is, in, can, was, and, to, play, a, that, at, see, he, my, you, said, went, had, go, love, all, here, we

  • Practice reading and writing these at home

  • Challenge your child to find sight words they know in books

Consonant Digraphs - H BROTHERS

  • We are learning about the H brothers.  We call the H brothers the combination of H with other consonants to make a new sound (SH, CH, TH)

  • This week we will learn about TH and review all the H brothers.

Reading Strategies:

  • We will begin to learn reading strategies to help us read unknown words in books.

  • Eagle Eye: He has really good eyesight and reminds us that we need to look at the pictures for clues about what the words might say.

  • Lips the Fish: This week we will learn about Lips the Fish.  Fish have great lips! Lips the Fish reminds us that we need to get our lips ready to say the beginning sound of a word.  We often combine Eagle Eye and Lips the Fish.

Oral Language

  • We are practicing different goals for oral language by presenting and listening to our All About Me bag presentations.

  • Oral language goasl;

    • I can ask and answer questions

    • I can be polite and take turns when talking

    • I can listen to others when they talk

    • I can talk to a small group or the whole class

Writing:

  • This week we will be focusing on reading and responding to texts.  We will focus on Dr. Seuss as it’s his birthday this week and even have a theme day to celebrate him!

Math

  • All kindergarten classes are fortunate enough to work with the math lead teacher, Ms.Thomas!  

  • Ms. Thomas will work with small groups of kids who have common math needs.

  • This week our focus will be:

    • Counting to and working with the number 100 for our 100th day celebration

    • Part, Part, Whole for numbers up to 10 (breaking numbers apart)​
