Here's what's to come this week in grade
one...
Dates to Remember:
~ Friday, Feb. 3: Team T-Shirt
Orders are due (team colours are the same as they were in K)
~ Tues. Feb. 7th and
February 21 (9:45-10:25 am): Skating at York Arena (please return
permission slip as soon as possible)
*************Let us know ASAP if you
cannot find a pair of skates and helmet for your child. We have a few at school, but not a lot. (They MUST have a helmet and skates to be
allowed on the ice.) We need lots of
volunteers to help on the ice and to tie skates. If you can help, please meet us at the rink.
~ Fri. Feb. 10: Sock Hop $2.00
~ Tues. Feb. 14: Valentine’s Day Celebration ( details will
follow)
~ Wed. Feb. 15: K-2 pancake breakfast
~ Thurs. Feb. 23: Hot Lunch Orders for March are Due
~ Fri. Feb. 24: PD Day – No School for Students
Special
Note: The office has
asked us to remind everyone to call the office if your child won’t be here at
school. Emailing the teacher is a help
but sometimes the teacher is absent or in a rush to get the students to music
or phys. ed. and puts it in as unknown.
To save yourself an attendance phone call from school - just call and
leave a message at school as well.
Thanks
This week at a glance:
Literacy
Word of the week: friend, why, where, give, gave
Word family: Ink
(pink, link, wink, kink, sink, blink, stink, etc.)
Oral Language: We are working on speaking and listening
skills (and it really is a skill)
Listener:
Look at the person you are speaking to, nod or comment on what the speaker
is saying, ask questions about what
the speaker is saying
Speaker:
Speak at a good volume (not too loud or quiet), add details to your story to
help the listener get a picture in
their head, look at who you are talking too.
Word work: al, l blends (al: also, walk, almost,
alright, always, etc. / l blends: black, blanket, flower, fly, clown,
cloud, clap, etc.) We will also be reviewing vowel sounds this week.
Reading: Students should be reading 10 minutes at night.
After reading, ask your child about the book. What did they like
about it? Or not like? What happened in the book? What do you think
the character is like? (mean, happy, kind, etc.) What in the book makes
you think that? Keep reading!
Writing
This week we will continue working
on BME planners to help students write a personal narrative. We will be review
all of our writing goals this week (I can… use a BME planner, stay on topic,
use punctuation, begin sentences and names with an uppercase, use the word
wall, use stretchy snake, add interesting words, grab my reader’s attention,)
Math
We are continuing our unit on
addition and subtraction to 18. Our big focus will be adding 9 to a number. We
are working on using the “make ten” strategy where students take one from the
number and add it to 9 to make 10. We
will continue using a variety of manipulatives to help (double ten frames,
number lines, etc.) We will also solve word problems, review double
facts to 10+10, as well as fact families. We will also be reviewing
counting on, counting back and ways to make ten. Keep practicing these at home.
*This is Ms. Thomas’ last week with
us.
Have a great week!
