Academic Update – January 16 – 27th

Reading

Students will continue to work in their guided reading groups. In these groups, students are reading books that are at their instructional level. They work on individual reading goals and strategies. Guided reading groups continue throughout the year but are fluid, so students may be moving in and out of groups based on their needs.

Writing

Our main focus for the next two weeks in writing will be writing a personal narrative with a focus on organization and conventions and adding details to our writing. Students should be using a question hook to start their stories.  It should answer the questions – who, where and when the story takes place.  We will continue to use transitional words (first, next, then, after, finally, etc.). Using these words will give their writing a more natural flow and help to keep their thoughts organized. We are also focusing on conventions of writing  punctuation and capital letters and spelling high frequency words correctly!

Word Work

Students have been introduced to 10 new word wall words.

1.      are

2.      best

3.      friends

4.      saw

5.      stop

6.      because

7.      our

8.      or

9.      how

10.   tell

Grammar/Phonics

We have been doing some work with vowels and knowing the difference between short and long vowels.  Short vowels have a sound and a long vowels say the name of the vowel.  We have been looking at different ways to make long vowels (silent e and 2 vowels go walking).  We will be looking at apostrophes and how to use them to show ownership.  Also, we will be doing some work with the r blends (br, cr, fr, dr, tr, gr, pr) and the l blends (bl, cl, fl, sl)

Math

We are beginning our unit on 2-digit addition.  We will be looking at adding and subtracting groups of 10 to a 2-digit number (34 + 40) first.  Then, we will get into the different strategies to add two 2-digit numbers.

I will send more information when we get into those strategies.
