  • We are continuing to collect food for the Fredericton Community Kitchen. Our target is to collect 50 pounds of food from the list found on the main website. Our food drive is looking a little low. This is a very important event. Many students from Barkers Point and their families benefit from programmes supported by the Food Bank. If every student contributed at least one food donation to our food drive we would have 350 food items to donate to the Comunity Kitchen. Let's work together to make our Food Drive a success. Please send in one food donation, if possible!
Take Home Books: New take home books will come home on Monday.  Please return them on Thursday.  This week students will not be bringing home a paper copy of  a book. They will be bringing home two A Level Books. Before reading please have your child show you the title and the author/illustrator.  Do a picture wal; look at the pictures in the story and try to tell the story using the picture. As your child reads a word his/ her finger should be under the  word.  It is important thatt they slow down and put their finger under every word as they read it. if your child comes to a word that she /he does not know have them look at the picture and then the first letter in the unknown word. What sound does the letter make? Can you think of any words that start with the letter that would make sense?  Remember to read one of the books every night!
.

Jolly Phonics: We have learned and will review S, A, T, I., P, N, C, K, E, H, R, M, D, G,O,L, U.,F, B,J, Z This week we will learn W,V.Please watch the videos online at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCjJYB07aSU . We have started deoding unknown words by looking at the first letter in the word and idenifying the beginning letter and the sound it makes. Then we look at the second letter and the third letter. We are working on decoding 3 letter words. If your child has not mastered the letters we have learned so so far and the sound the letter makes it will be very difficult for him/her to decode the word. Knowing the letters we have learned so far and the sound they make are the first steps in learning to read.It is for this reason that it is important to watch the Jolly Phonics video every night. When you are assisting your child with learning the letters adn Jolly Phonics it is important that you showyour child the letter before asking the sound it makes. When assessing I found the students could make the Jolly Phonics sound when I said a letter but many did not recognize the letter in print. When watching the Jooly Phonics Video it is important to draw your childs attention to the letter at the top of the page and identify the letter befor doing the action and sound.

ABC Boom: We say the following sounds as we make the strokes.
  • Plop: Most letters "start in the sky and drop down to the ground”. We use tall plops to form upper case letters and lower case letters like Tt, Ll, and Hh. We use short plops to make lower case letters like m, n, and r.
  • Vroom: This is the horizontal stroke that goes from left to right. We use it to start lower case e and we also use it in upper case letters such as T, E, F, A, Z, and H.
  • Boing: This is a curved stroke that reminds us of a hop. We use it to create the curve in letters such as h, m, and n.
  • Blowing Sound: This stroke makes a circle.  We imagine blowing a pinwheel as it goes around in a circle.  We use it to make Oo and Q
  • Splash: We picture a fish or a dolphin splashing in the water to make a U shape.  We find this stroke in U, u, q
  • Prrrshhh: We think about a rocket taking off.  We start from the bottom and go straight up.  We find it in a, d, g, q, N
  • Shlang: We think about the helmet of an astronaut closing.  We find it in P, p, b, B, D, R
  • Beep, Beep: We think about a truck backing up.  This is the opposite of vroom.  We find it in G, and we can also use it instead of vroom for the tops of F and E.
  • YOOP: We think of a worm going into the ground. We find YOOP in  J, j, g
  • WEE--Wee represents a straight line that is slanted. The visual is thinking of sliddign down a hill. While going down the hill we WEE!
  • We have been practicing printing the letters we have learned  in Jolly Phonics using ABC Boom. It is important that students practicing printing the letters we have learned at home as well as at school.
Sight Words: me, I, it, like, the, is, in,at, can
This week we will add was,and to our Sight Words. It is important that students be able to identify these words in a snap (instantly). A good way to master these words is to copy the words on a piece of paper or index card. Every night show your child the falsh cards. If your child can identify a word in a nsap put a check mark on the back of the piece of apper/ index card. When you child has earned 3 check marks then your child has mastered the word and you can file the word away. Be sure to add the new words to the pile.

Writing--This week we will continue working on our Writing Goals. We will practice writing sentences that include was, and.

Math: Last week students were assessed on their ability to sort objects based on colour, size adn shape. I am pelased to say that all students did a great job and have an understanding of Sorting!
This week we will begin learning about Patterns. Students will learn to create and identify patterns using two objects. We will start with amkeing a colour pattern. Students will be expected to create a 2 colour pattern using cubes based on colour. They will learn that they can name their pattern by colour or use letters such as ABABAB. A being one colour and B being the second colour.

It was wonderful to meet with so many parents during Parent Teacher Conferences. If you could not attend on Thursday night or Friday please let me know and I will try to reschedule!
Have a GREAT Week! Stay in touch!
