Simonds High Student Wins Prestigious Schulich Award

Philanthropist Seymour Schulich believes in supporting young minds and especially those who display great leadership qualities. Min Ji Kim, a Grade 12 student at Simonds High School, is on the receiving end of his philanthropy. She has been awarded a $60,000 Scholarship for furthering her studies in the field of Sciences at UNBSJ.

Min Ji is one of 50 winners across Canada of the prestigious Schulich Leadership Award. The program was launched in 2012 and funds scholarships valued at more than $100 million to some of Canada’s most highly regarded universities, so the recipients can pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) with the goal of developing global pioneers in those fields.
Min Ji arrived in Canada in 2011 and moved to Saint John and began at Simonds High School in 2013. Not only has Min Ji maintained academic excellence, she has also been very involved in the school; taking part in the TADD program, Craft Club, Choir, Student Council, Helping Hands, and the Swim team. She also finds the time to work in her community as a Royal Canadian Sea Cadet, a volunteer at Horizon Health Network, a Shad Valley Ambassador and a part time Cashier at her family’s business. Min Ji has a true desire to help other people and will use her education to continue this throughout her life.
Schulich Leader Scholarships are open to all graduating high school or Cégep students across Canada who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and have an interest in pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) at one of a list of partner universities.
Students must possess at least two of three criteria:

  1. Academic excellence
  2. Outstanding community, business or entrepreneurial leadership
  3. Financial need
Simonds has been honored to have her as a student for the past two years and celebrate this huge accomplishment with her. Your hard work, dedication and contagious enthusiasm has earned you this award Min Ji, congratulations from all of us at Simonds High School. May Simonds Pride Continue.
Min Ji would like to thank her parents, teachers and friends for all their help and to let them know that without them, she could not have accomplished all that she has.
