Volunteer support is highly valued as it adds to student growth and school programming. A volunteer works with with students, staff, and other volunteers. It is essential that volunteers and the people they work with establish mutually satisfying relationships which prove helpful to our students. This relationship is built on trust, co-operation, and a clear understanding of each other's roles.

The following are a few points in defining your role as a volunteer, and in making your experience as a volunteer with us a success:

  • Confidentiality is of the highest priority. Volunteers may come to know sensitive information regarding a student’s academic ability, relationships with others, behavior, et cetera. We ask that this information remain confidential at all times.
  • Please remember that any evaluation of school personnel, students, or programs is the responsibility of school administration and the PSSC.
  • Volunteers may be involved in a variety of activities in our school and need to be aware that they are ultimately responsible to the school principal and will work at all times under the direction of a designated staff member. Remember also that the school adminstration and staff members are always there to respond to any questions or concerns.
  • Our school has a code of expectations for students and staff.  As a volunteer, it is expected that you will be treated by students and staff in a way that reflects our school's code of conduct.

Requirements of SMS Volunteers

All volunteers who work with our children must provide proof that they have been cleared through the RCMP. To complete this, please do the following:

  1. Please visit the local RCMP detatchment and request to have a "criminal record vulnerable sector check" completed.  You will require two pieces of identification (one photo, plus one other than your social insurance card).  This must be done in person, and takes two-four business days to complete.
  2. All volunteers who will be working with our students on a one-to-one basis must complete Policy 701 training.  Once the questionnarie is completed, it can be printed off, signed, and turned in to the office at Sussex Middle School.
  3. There is one further form required for volunteer drivers who may be using their own vehicles to transport students. This form is entitled Authorization to Transport Students Participating in School Events. Please make sure the second page is read thoroughly before completing the form and that the school is provided with evidence (a copy of your insurance card) that you are carrying a minimum of $1,000,000 liability insurance.
