Woodlawn Beliefs
Purpose: We believe the purpose of public education is to provide learning opportunities to enhance aesthetic awareness, critical thinking skills and a desire for life-long learning in order for students to contribute to society and respond to a global community.
Relationships: We believe that productive working relationships require a collaborative atmosphere predicated on trust and respect where all individuals are encouraged to take creative risks to move the organization toward achieving its goals.
Leadership: We believe that effective leadership encourages the educational community to thrive individually and collectively while maintaining a focus in support of key improvement areas.
Teaching and Learning: We believe teaching focuses on the development of the whole child who is nurtured by all adults in the educational community. It requires knowledge, flexibility and enthusiasm to inspire in students a strong desire for life long learning.
Curriculum: We are committed to delivering the curriculum in a way that enhances the learning potential of all students and contributes to the acquisition of skills while developing an awareness of the uniqueness and diversity of our community, thus enhancing student success.

Woodlawn Mission, Purpose, Motto, Welcome and Improvement Indicators
It is the mission of the Woodlawn Learning Centre to rekindle hope and promote attitudes that encourage each student to acquire personal, social and lifelong learning skills in a nurturing environment.
The main purpose of the Woodlawn Learning Centre is to address the issues that prevent students from being successful in the traditional high school. To do that, it is imperative that students recognize what is preventing both academic and personal success in life.
The decision to become part of the Woodlawn family demonstrates the commitment to bring about some positive changes in a student’s academic and personal life. The only one who can guarantee success is the student. By taking advantage of their time here and what Woodlawn has to offer, they will begin a journey along a path headed for academic and personal success. The Centre's motto is "Individually Spirited United in Learning" and it accurately describes students who attend Woodlawn. Students who have accepted responsibility for their past and are willing to unite with others to accomplish their goals in school and life will be successful in reaching this goal.

Nine Effective Practices for Alternative Education

According to a recent literature review published in “Education and Treatment of Children Vol34, No. 4, 2011” the authors suggests nine effective practices for use in Alternative Education Settings. It is the intention that we use these nine practices within our growth model at Woodlawn Learning Centre and as such we have decided to place them within this School Improvement Plan and our Comprehensive Guidance Plan. The nine effective practices are as follows and are intendant to merge with the  Provincial School Improvement Indicators and allow for us to focus our growth at Woodlawn Learning Centre:

1. Low student to teacher ratio.
2. Highly structured classrooms with behavioral classroom management.
3. Positive methods to increase appropriate behaviors.
4. School-based adult mentors.
5. Functional behavioral assessment (FBA)
6. Social skills instruction
7. Effective academic instruction
8. Parent involvement
9. Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS)

The staff of Woodlawn welcomes all students and look forward to walking with them along the path leading to their success.
