Since 1996, the Government of Canada’s annual Black History Month campaign encourages all Canadians to learn more about Black history in Canada. This month, we will highlight some significant events and people that have contributed to the story of Black Canadians and their communities, and the impact that they have made to all parts of society.
The first person of African heritage known to have come to what is now Canada arrived over 400 years ago. In 1604, Mathieu Da Costa arrived with the French explorers Pierre Du Gua De Monts and Samuel de Champlain.
