We wish the staff of the Hampton Education Centre all the best this week as they prepare for the move of their offices to Hampton, to one end of Hampton Elementary School.  We certainly recognize that it has been a few months of transition for these staff members as they had to move upstairs in their current building and then a few weeks ago begin to gradually pack up their “stuff” to move.   Good luck with the move and thank you to SEO Paul Smith and staff for all of the extra this has meant and to staff from facilities for helping with boxes and moving.

Teacher Growth Goals are due October 5, 2013, and this is on a weekend – same date each year!  Marc Godin is able to see how many templates are filled out for each school and as of last Friday it was 355 so we have a ways to go with the electronic template!  For smaller schools Campobello has 9 completed, Hazen White 10, Loch Lomond 13, Macdonald Consolidated 17 and looking at larger schools Harbour View leads the way with 50 completed, KVHS at 47, Sussex High at 29 and Quispamsis Middle at 27!

Today is a Principals meeting in Saint John for K-12 with a morning of professional learning facilitated by staff on Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  On Thursday and Friday we have a special facilitator for high school administrators and SPR’s when we host Sandra Herbst.  Sandra is a Superintendent on leave from Western Canada and is sharing her knowledge about engaging students and assessment across the country. Several of us heard her last April for a day at UNB and ten ASD-S educators spent a week in early July with Sandra at Developing Successful Schools in Sackville.

October 1-7, 2013 is NB Wellness Week. I know NBTA Counselor Carmen Meehan is still in search of a wellness facilitator from each school.

Teacher Supplies Fund ($250) has been expanded to include in addition to classroom teachers and specialists, all Education Support Services - guidance and resource teachers. I have asked about Education Support teachers – Literacy/Numeracy.  For now, please keep all receipts until we find out from the Department how the fund will be tracked this year!

We CELEBRATE Sussex Regional High School on their Community Garden, a great write-up in the paper about the “harvest” and the foods being donated to the local sharing club.  We also CELEBRATE Vincent Massey Elementary School on the “re-build” of their wonderful playground this week.  This is the result of hard work in fundraising, grant applications and now the deconstruction and construction.  The Official opening is Sunday at 5 p.m.!

Two grant opportunities – one from the NBTA with their annual “Teacher Designated Professional Learning Grants 2014.” Information was in the recent NBTA News and applications are available on line in mid-October.

Earlier in the month, Principals received information on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) School Leadership Grants for action research and the deadline is September 30, 2013.  This is for teams of 4 to have a ½ release per month and the team a budget of $1,000.   One school in ASD-S from each level will receive a grant from the Department.  Please see your principal for the information if interested.

Tomorrow we will be well represented at a provincial conference, “Internet Child Exploitation.” Our new District Education Plan will have an ASD-S strategy to ensure all students receive information on this important topic.

Sunday is the annual PORTAGE graduation at Sussex Regional High School – the three teachers at PORTAGE are part of ASD-S, Hampton Centre and we recognize them for the work they do with students from around our province and Atlantic Canada.
