Kindergarten Week of Oct. 1-5

Dear Parents,
Please take note of our learning from this week!  Please do not forget to sign up to my Twitter feed to see your children in action while at school.  They do amazing things and I love to capture these moments for you to enjoy. Twitter:  @TingleyMrs
Literacy:

Reading:
·        In our read alouds this week, we have been focusing on making connections between the text and our own lives.
Sight Words:
·        Our words for this week are at, it.  Please read over the handout I am sending home on Thursday with instructions for sight word practice and some fun and engaging ways you can practice these words with your child.  Automatic recall of sight words is crucial for your child’s reading development.
Phonics:
·        Jolly Phonics – Letters Tt, Pp

Phonological Awareness:
·        Rhyme awareness and rhyme production have been a focus for the past few weeks.  This concept has been challenging for many of us so please read books to your children with rhymes, sing nursery rhymes, watch children’s songs such as Down by the Bay online and have some simple fun with your child making up silly rhymes together.  This can be a challenging concept for many students but the more exposure they have to rhyme, the quicker they will master the skill.
Writing:
·        We have worked on telling stories through pictures by focusing on what happened first, next, then and last.

Numeracy:
·        In math, we have been focusing on learning our numbers to 5, counting sets to 5, creating sets to 5 and subitizing (automatic recognition of a set of dots or objects to 5).
·        We will continue to work on this concept moving ahead but will also move into concept of more, fewer and same as.

You and Your World:
·        Apple Life Cycle – We have had a wonderful time learning all about apples and their life cycles in preparation for our apple picking trip this Friday.  We have explored and examined apples closely as scientists, have measured the mass of apples using a two pan balance and have done some print making with apples (and other seasonal vegetables) using paint.

·        Thanksgiving – We have read some books and discussed thankfulness in advance of Thanksgiving this weekend.
·        We were introduced to our Solution Center Chart to help us solve friendship problems that arise in class or on the playground.  Please ask your child what a “glitch, bummer and disaster” are and see if they can tell you how to solve a disagreement they have with the friends.  We have just begun using this means of solving conflict but you can expect to hear lots more about it moving forward.
