McAdam Avenue School Week at a Glance June 5-9Happy Friday! I hope you've had a wonderful week. On Monday, our grade 4/5
class hosted their friends from York Care for an intergenerational BBQ. Many
thanks to Ms. McCabe and Anita Newling for organizing this! We also
participated in whole-school math fact BINGO. On Tuesday, our friends from
Nashwaaksis Memorial joined us for Music Madness! Their K-2 classes came from
9-10am and their 3-5 classes from 10:30-11:30. There were music activities inside
and the students also played together outside on the site of their future new
school! Yesterday, many students in grades 3-5 headed to Nashwaaksis Middle
School for District Track and Field. Our little school received 3 ribbons! E in
grade 5 got 1st in discus and 2rd in the 80m run. K in grade 5 got 3rd in the
ball throw! On top of that, our students were amazing teammates and very
patient with the waiting, heat and unexpected lockdown! Families of students
who were at track and field were notified as soon as we went into lockdown and
then when the lockdown was lifted. Our amazing School Counselor, Mrs. LeBlanc,
debriefed with us about what happened and then met with a small group who still
wanted to talk. Our students followed instructions beautifully and their staff
members as well as first responders worked diligently and quickly to keep us
all safe.

McAdam Avenue School Week at a Glance - May 29-June 2Good afternoon and Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a wonderful week. I
was writing "June 2" in the subject of this email and thinking to
myself, "HOW did that happen?" It is so hard to believe we are into
June next week! We had our May Student Voice meeting on Tuesday; please see the
students' ideas below! On Wednesday, we hosted our Welcome to Kindergarten
event at NMS and got to meet our students who will be starting school next
year. It was a wonderful afternoon and we can't wait to welcome our new
students in the fall! Also on Wednesday, we held a Cultural Learning Day at
MAS! Each class chose a country to learn about and then set up stations,
activities, posters and videos to teach the other classes about their country.
We hope your child told you some of the things they learned! Please see a few
photos below. Yesterday, we held our May Star Student assembly and Mrs. LeBlanc
discussed how families are all different and special. Thank you to those of you

McAdam Avenue School Week at a Glance - May 22-26Good evening, everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic week. As
mentioned last week, I was at the Canadian Association of Principals (CAP)

Thursday, and Kiwanis and Home and School served a pancake breakfast that
morning. Today, our students in grades 3-5 attended the Track and Field meet at
NMS and I received lots of awesome pictures and saw many huge smiles. My

McAdam Avenue School Weekly Memo - March 13-17Good afternoon, MAS Families,
We had a very fun week this week with lots of excitement! On Monday, all
students helped make a spaghetti, garlic bread and salad lunch using vegetables
grown right here at MAS. Several students told me that it was the “best day
ever!” We also had Kindness BINGO in the afternoon; congrats to Ms. McCabe’s
class for being the big winners! We want to thank the Fredericton Police Force
for judging our Black History Month bulletin boards. The boards were all
amazing, but the one that came out on top was Ms. Boone’s class’ board! On
Thursday, our students visited Nashwaaksis Memorial for a tour, dance party and
lunch. We all felt very welcome and look forward to our next visit. Today, we
gathered in the gym for a pj/movie.
We also want to congratulate community member Carolyn MacBeth for winning
our gift card raffle draw! This fundraiser brought in over $1000 for student
activities – amazing! We will make sure the remainder of the year is tons of
fun! Thank you to everyone for supporting the school with this fundraiser.

Ask your child what this means! On Thursday, we had our fifth “Student Voice
Meeting”. Check out the image to see what our students love about our school
and how they think we could improve the school. We discuss their ideas at our

McAdam Avenue School Weekly Memo - Jan. 9 - 13 Good morning and happy Sunday! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays with
family and friends. We are happy to get back into routine and to see the
students tomorrow!
One of our goals as we get back into the swing of things here at MAS is to
partner with the students and staff at Nashwaaksis Memorial School to ease into
our move to NMS next fall. I was Vice-Principal there last year, my children
attend that school, and I still have a wonderful relationship with Jason Burns,
the Principal at Memorial as well as the staff. It is a fantastic school and
Jason and I are working closely to make the transition as smooth as possible.
If you ever have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.
The January calendar was sent home in December, but below you will find a
digital copy for your reference:

Reminders for this week:
-It is not too late to hand in the form if your child would like
Chinese food on January 23 to celebrate Chinese New Year. If you have misplaced
the form, please just email Roxy or I and we will add your child to the list.
I'd ask that you let us know by Wednesday, Jan. 11.
-If you or someone you know would like to speak to our students about
Chinese culture this month, please reach out to me.
-Other than that, it is a fairly 'normal' week as we settle back into our
daily routines. Please refer to the January calendar for upcoming activities
this month.
I hope you have a great Sunday and I look forward to a wonderful week ahead!

Our concert was a huge success on Wednesday thanks to our music teacher, Ms.
Simmonds, as well as our students! Students worked hard to learn their songs
and also to decorate the gym for the concert. Kudos to all involved!
Thursday, we had our monthly Student Voice meeting. Students were excited to
share their thoughts about how we can make the school even better.
Today, we will have our Friendship Friday read aloud and talked about treating

Principal Weekly Memo - Dec. 5-9Happy Friday, MAS community! I hope everyone had a wonderful week. It really
is hard to believe that it is December already! The excitement is in the air
here as we enter the most exciting month of the year! We have lots happening
this month and are looking forward to many special events with our students.
This week, we were very pleased to welcome the Fredericton Community Foundation
on Thursday as they helped our family volunteers prepare breakfast for our
students. We received a grant through this foundation for food and are so
grateful for their support! On that note, Monday, December 5 is
International Volunteer Day. We have a formal celebration for our volunteers at
the end of the year, but we want to take this opportunity to thank EVERYONE who
volunteers at our school and donates items for events. I have worked at many
schools as a teacher, literacy lead and Admin, and I must say I have not seen
the community support like we have here. Our staff and students are very lucky!
Our wonderful librarian, Janaya Lamkey, has been working hard at getting all
of our new books ready for the shelves in the library. Below you’ll find some
pictures of the books the students chose through our Indigo grant, and we have

Principal Weekly Memo Nov. 28-Dec. 2Good afternoon, families. I hope everyone had a wonderful week! We had a
great week here at MAS celebrating Diversity and Respect Week! This week used
to be referred to as “Anti-Bullying” week, but we have broadened the learning
and discussions beyond just anti-bullying in the past few years. Monday, we
played whole-school “Respect” Bingo. Congratulations to Mrs. Belyea’s class for
winning and on your prizes! Tuesday, a few of our Student Leaders did read
alouds around diversity in each classroom and facilitated discussions about the
content in the books. We are very proud of the messages they had for all of our
students! Wednesday was Identity Day! Students loved sharing things with their
classmates to show how they are unique and special. Thursday, we had our
November Star Student assembly. Our school mascot, Star, even made an
appearance! Mrs. LeBlanc, school counselor, spoke to the students about using
our WITS to solve problems, and 2 star student awards were handed out for each
class. Congratulations to all! Today, we will have a read aloud with Mrs.

Principal Weekly Memo Nov. 21-25Good morning, MAS families. I hope everyone has had a great week so far. The
snow this week has certainly upped the excitement here at school!
Molly Brown, our District First Nations teacher, was here on Monday to share
Wolastoquey teachings with each class. We are very grateful that she came to
spend the day with us!
Yesterday, 3 of our classes visited Chapters to help choose books for our
school library! It was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience to fill carts
full of books all in one day! We look forward to getting these books sorted and
ready for sign-out in our library. I heard that the classes who stayed at
school did a "Rule the School" and when we returned, they were
playing games in the hallway!
Next week is “Diversity and Respect” Week. Please see the attached outline
of what will be happening daily. Our Student Leaders are excited to help us
with the initiatives for this week. They've helped put up posters and will read
books to each class! We have been discussing diversity a lot this year as it is
one of our School Improvement goals, so we are really looking forward to the
week.

place!

Principal Weekly Memo Oct 31-Nov 4Well, the day has finally arrived – Halloween Howl! Our volunteers and staff have been working hard to get our school ready for this event that we have missed so much the last few years. This week, we had a visit from CNIB to talk about vision differences. As well, we held our second Student Voice Meeting. Different students are invited to attend this meeting every month, with the goal of having 100% representation by the end of the year. See the attached picture for our students’ ideas this month. We also had our Star Student assembly which is always very exciting! Mrs. LeBlanc (school counsellor) and I met with students on Thursday who might be interested in becoming a MAS Student Leader! See attached pictures for the activity we did with the students to form the group. Today, we’ll have our first Friendship Friday read aloud where I will read a story over Teams about how to be a good friend, and we will discuss the message of the story as a school.

Weekly Memo - Oct. 24-28Happy Friday, everyone! We had another great week of learning here at McAdam
Avenue. It was “Safe Schools Week” so we practiced bus evacuation, a lockdown
and a site evacuation. Unfortunately, it was raining on Tuesday so we are
postponing our fire drill until next week. The pancake breakfast on Thursday
was delicious – many thanks to Kiwanis and our Home and School volunteers for
providing this for our students and staff! Great news – our Java Moose
fundraiser brought in over $1100 for student activities at MAS! Thank you so
much to our wonderful school community for all the support with this! We also
want to thank our parent, Becky, for coming in on Friday to walk us through an
obstacle course while showing us what it would be like if we had visual
impairments. Please see the image attached. I also want to thank you for taking
the time to fill out the Family Survey that supports our School Improvement
Plan. We were very pleased with the results and received some great ideas about
how we can do better as a school to be more inclusive. Please see the results

tallied yet, but a preliminary look at order forms shows that it was certainly
successful! We will keep you updated on how much was raised for student
activities. Yesterday, Jenna E from Downtown Optometry came to speak to us for

then share with you that you can then share with family and friends!
- The Terry Fox Run forms
will be sent home on Monday, Sept. 12. Donations can also be made
online at https://schools.terryfox.ca/7591
- Cross Country practices
start this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch recess for students in
grade 3-5. I asked students who wanted to participate and sent
information forms home with those students about our Wednesday afternoon
meets. If your child has decided they would like to participate, I
will gladly send a form home with them. Just let me know!
Please note, you would be responsible for taking your child to these meets
on the Wednesday afternoons indicated on the form.
- School pictures are
Wednesday, Sept. 14.
- Becca Schofield Day
assembly is Thursday, Sept. 15.
- Becca Schofield Day is
Saturday, Sept. 17. Each student will get a ‘random act of kindness’
card to take home to do a kind deed and encourage others to do the same!
- If you are filling out
the parent portal form, please note that there is no place to put your
child’s name on this form. Please write his/her name at the top.
- If you would like
support with school lunches in the form of a bagged lunch for your child,
please let either myself or Roxy know. Roxanne.yerxa@nbed.nb.ca
- The breakfast program
that I spoke about at Meet the Teacher has not started yet. I will
let you know when it does. In the meantime, please have your child
eat breakfast at home. Some students are bringing their food to
school to eat which can be disruptive as instructional time begins
right away.
- School supply fees
($47.25) can be paid online at https://anglophonewest.schoolcashonline.com/. If you would like to work out a
payment schedule, please let Roxy or I know. We would be happy to
support you with this.
- We
are having many safety issues with our drop-offs and dismissals. A letter was
sent home with the procedures, but I do want to reiterate what this should
look like:
DROP OFF: Enter
the driveway near the tennis court in single file.
Pull ahead to the 3rd student drop-off No Parking Sign where the
duty teacher will meet you. Please make this quick as others are waiting .It is
a kiss and drop only. If you need to get out with your child, please park in
the tennis courts or on the road.
DO NOT PASS AT ANY TIME DURING DROP OFF.WAIT IN THE LINE, PLEASE. We will
put out our ‘green men’ signs to remind you that you are not permitted to pass
by others, even if you parked and your child is dropped off already.
PICK UP: Again,
please only use the inside lane for picking up students. Please DO NOT
use the outside passing lane as a pick up lane.
Enter the driveway near the tennis court in single file.
Pull ahead in the driveway as far as possible. If you need to leave in a
hurry, we ask that you pull past the school walkway or park on the road.
If you are getting out of your vehicle to pick up your child, please park
past the school entrance or on the street or tennis court. This will help keep
the traffic moving as cars cannot pull out around as per safety procedures.
