​Five elementary schools in ASD-W took part in the 2019 regional drama festival on April 16 at Oromocto High School.

Students from Lincoln Elementary School, Montgomery Street School, New Maryland Elementary, Gagetown School and Cambridge Narrows Community School performed for the adjudicators throughout the day. 

"This festival builds enthusiasm for live theatre, emphasizes the importance of fine arts, and gives youth the opportunity to have fun working together and being creative," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Dominic Cardy. "These are all important components of a well-rounded education, which is why encouraging participation in the arts is one of the objectives of our 10-year education plan."

Acting School Superintendent Catherine Blaney said teachers, parents and volunteers spent countless hours working with the young performers, noting learning does not always need to occur inside a classroom. 

The drama productions presented were as follows:

Lincoln Elementary: Even Monsters Can Be Princesses

Montgomery Street School: Fairy Tale Misfits

New Maryland Elementary School: The Most Epic Birthday Party

Gagetown Elementary: The Party

Cambridge Narrows Community School: Ellen's Eloquent Earrings

The adjudicators for the day were Sharisse LeBrun, an educator, director and performer with Theatre New Brunswick, and Ben Harrison, performer​ and artistic director for Branch Out Productions in Fredericton.
