Grade 1 Week at a Glance (Feb. 11-15)

Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh
Week at a Glance (Feb. 11-15)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

Nightly – Read good-fit books. Check for comprehension by asking your child the “who”, “what”, and “where” of the stories they read (characters, problem, and setting).
·        Have him/her provide a retell of the main events in the story.
·       Practice Sight Words and Sound Teams.

Literacy:

Words of the Week:  has, as, because, man, into (please highlight these on your sight word sheet).
Reading:
·        This week we will continue to focus on ComprehensionI can retell a story. Please have your child retell the stories they read at home, as this is an important part of checking for understanding.
·        Students must understand the; who, what, where, when, and, why of the books they are reading in order to have appropriate comprehension. When they are finished reading a book have them re tell the story to include organized details. To reach the second report card benchmark, the students need to be reading “E level" books independently and with good comprehension. We are also continuing to work on reading good-fit books fluently.

Sound Team: Review & Blends
  • Please continue to review all sound teams.
  • Along with asking your child what sound the sound team makes (ie; “what sound does ay say?”), also ask your child to tell you the sound team that make a certain sound (ie; “What team says the ay sound?”, while you actually make the long a sound).
  • Students will continue to learn how two consonants blend together to make one sound. This week we will focus on: pl, sl, br, cr, dr
  • Have your child practice reading: clap, black, flop, glad, plate, sled, brick, drum
·        The goal is for students to blend the two initial sounds together when reading a word, rather than separating them into their two individual sounds. For example; the word “clay” should be sounded out as “cl – ay” not “c – l – ay”

Word Family: ight – how many words can your child write down that end with –ight?
Writing:
·        students are continuing to work on making their writing more fluent and detailed by using Sentence Stretchers (connecting words) such as because, and, with, so, and but. For example, the sentence “I made cookies.” can be stretched using the word “with” – “I made cookies with chocolate frosting and sprinkles”.

  • We have been discussing how to make our writing more fluent by using these connecting words to also join short “choppy” sentences. For example, “I went to the park. I went with my mom” can be changed to “I went to the park with my mom.” Or, Instead of “I was tired. I went to bed.” say “I was tired so I went to bed.” etc.

Math: Addition:  Practice the following:
  • counting from 0-20 by 2’s and 0-50 by 5’s and 10’s.
  • doubles facts with answers to 12. (1+1, 2+2…..6+6)
  • adding 0, 1 and 2 to numbers, so answers come quickly (with sums to 12)
  • addition using fingers to “count-on”
  • This week we will be learning the “doubles plus 1” strategy. For example, if your child knows 4+4=8, then he/she can easily solve 4+5 because it is just one more! Knowing doubles facts “in a snap” can help students solve these “near doubles” facts much easier.
·        Doubles videos
  • We continued discussing the “does it make sense” strategy, simply meaning does an answer make sense? It would not make sense when adding two numbers together to end up with a smaller sum then one of the numbers you are adding. For example, if you figured out the answer for 4+3 to be 2 then you know you must have made a mistake! Or, when adding a “low” number to another “low” number we should not end up with a really “high” number. For example, it would not make sense to say 5+2=20 because we know 20 is a lot more than 5!
