The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) is providing a free summer learning opportunity. These courses are available to students who are registered in grade 12 in a New Brunswick High School, in June of this year, in one of the four Anglophone districts.

This program will allow you to earn a mark for the course that will be recorded on your existing transcript. It is primarily intended for those heading to university or community college in the fall.

Registrations will take place through your school, same as for regular online courses. Check with guidance or administration at your school for information. Courses need to meet a minimum enrollment threshold to be offered. Details will be shared with schools prior to the end of the registration period.

Information for students and families

Q. How many courses can I take?

A. Students can enroll in a maximum of two courses.

Q. What’s the workload like?

A. Each course is a complete 90h course, so you can expect to be putting in a substantial amount of time each day. While you can work at your own pace, it is reasonable to expect that you will need to work 4-5 hours each day for a single course.

Q. Where/how will the course be offered? Who is teaching them?

A. Courses will be offered through D2L Brightspace, the same platform as regular distance learning courses. Courses will be taught by online teachers from NB schools.

Q. Do I have to have been enrolled in the course previously?

A. No, but it will certainly help. You do need to have the prerequisites to be enrolled.

Q. I’m in grade 11 now, can I take one of these courses?

A. Unfortunately no, the focus is on those heading to post-secondary in the fall.

Q. Do I need to be available each day? When do I need to be online?

A. You need to demonstrate evidence of working each day, but there is some flexibility about when you do your work. Teachers will mostly be available in the morning (9-12).

Q. How is my mark recorded? What if I don’t pass?

A. Your existing transcript will be updated to indicate your mark. Where the primary intent of offering these courses is post-secondary readiness, unsuccessful attempts won’t be recorded on your transcript.

Q. What do I need for equipment and internet?

A. You will need a computer to complete the course (PC or Mac). Where all content is online, internet access is required. For software, you need an up to date browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari).
