Graduation Plans 2020

Graduation is an important milestone for our grade 12 students and many people have been working with provincial, district and school committees to ensure we celebrate our graduates in these unprecedented times.

As Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development Dominic Cardy announced in April, due to the restrictions of social gatherings and requirement of social distancing instituted by Public Health and our government in response to COVID-19, traditional graduation activities are not possible.   We have worked within the restrictions and planned the following changes for the Graduates of 2020.

Graduation & Diploma:  We will be celebrating our grads with an individual diploma presentation. The graduates will receive their diploma and a souvenir gown and cap to keep and take home. We will have all the traditional components of a virtual ceremony posted on our website including the valedictory speech and musical selections by grads. The exact details will be provided to families when they have been finalized based on the provincial health guidelines.  Chair: Mary Waddell and Committee

Prizes and Scholarships:  Prizes and scholarships will be determined in June and will be incorporated into the graduation ceremony.  A PowerPoint of awards will be on the school website.  Chair: Natalie Capson-Daniels

Baccalaureate Service: The Baccalaureate Service is a non-denominational church service for our graduates, their families and friends. This year there were plans to hold a city-wide Baccalaureate Service for the first time. Due to the restrictions of gatherings and social distancing we will not be able to gather under one roof, but we will be able to have a Virtual Baccalaureate Service… also a first! This year’s Virtual Baccalaureate Service will go live on Facebook and YouTube on June 7 at 6:00PM. Government restrictions due to COVID-19 were respected during the preparation of the Virtual Baccalaureate Service. There is information about this grad event on the LHHS webpage https://secure1.nbed.nb.ca/sites/ASD-W/LeoHayesHigh/Pages/default.aspx  under the Upcoming Events tab and at Baccalaureate Grad Service 2020 Facebook page.    Chairs: Cindy Grasse and Dan Wilton.

Prom:  Unfortunately, there will be no prom this year.   However, the Prom committee has continued to work on the photo story which is a compilation of pictures that the graduates submit to the prom committee. We normally show the photo story during the prom but this year we plan to post the photo story on the school webpage so the grads can enjoy many memories of their time together at Leo Hayes.    Chairs: Shelley Francis and Dan Wilton.

Safe Grad:  We are not able to celebrate Safe Grad as we normally would at this time.  The Safe Grad committee  have plans in place to provide each grad with a memento of their grad year. We will be in contact with you once these mementos come in, with a plan to get these items to the grads.  Chairs: Sister Karen Kelly & Dominic Leach

Lawn Signs: In partnership with Taylor Printing LHHS has purchased a lawn sign for each graduate.  If you would like to purchase a personalized sign with your grad’s picture, please visit the Taylor Printing website for more details.  Chair: Kim Hepditch

During these unprecedented times, everyone is trying to be as creative and flexible as possible to provide a celebration of your child’s graduation within the restrictions we must follow.    More information will be forthcoming as plans and details are finalized.  Thank you for your understanding and stay safe.
