Winter Plan and Test Kits Update

Dear ASD-S Families,

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has reviewed the COVID-19 safety guidelines and yesterday Minister Cardy announced the new Winter Plan for schools. Developed in consultation with Public Health, the plan will strengthen health and safety measures as a result of the increase of cases in schools and early learning facilities, with the aim of keeping our students healthy, safe, and learning in-person to the greatest extent possible throughout the winter months. The full plans are available on the Healthy and Safe Schools website and message from Minister Cardy can be read here.

Among the changes is an update to our school calendar.

December 17, 2021 will be the last day of classes before the winter break for students in kindergarten to Grade 6.

To allow school staff time to prepare and implement required changes for our January 10 reopening:

December 21, 2021 will be the last day of classes before the winter break for students in Grades 7 and 8.

Students in grades 9-12 will continue as planned until noon, December 23, 2021.

As well, we will be sending free rapid test (COVID-19) kits home with students in grades K-6 this week. Students in grades 7-12 will receive their kits next week. Students are asked to test twice a week and before they return to school to help protect their loved ones and limit the spread of COVID-19 over the winter break and upon their return to school. Please note, kits must be kept in a dry and warm location above 2 degrees Celsius.

Please continue to follow all Public Health safety measures this week and over the break, and help and encourage your child to do the same. This includes getting vaccinated, washing your hands and using sanitizer, wearing a mask, physically distancing, and staying home and getting tested if your child has even one symptom.

We thank you for your support and patience over the last many months. We know these changes can be stressful and we appreciate your understanding.

I wish you the best for a safe and restful winter break,

Zoё Watson

Superintendent
